I remember reading about a company doing this some years ago - the problem is scaling it up to produce the millions of barrels we need per day would take enormous investment in facilities and the ultimate cost would be ridiculous.

If anybody ever came up with a cost-effective solution for converting algae to fuel oil, it would only be a short matter of time before the USFWS would have algae placed on the endangered species list.
