MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Longtime Democratic Secretary of State Doug La Follette plans to file paperwork on Thursday that would allow him to run for governor if a recall election is ordered against Republican Gov. Scott Walker.
La Follette said Wednesday he still hasn't decided whether he will actually get into the race. But he says he wants to create a campaign committee so he can better gauge interest in him running and better determine if he would be a strong candidate.
Former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk and state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout have announced they are running.
La Follette is the only Democrat currently in statewide office, which he says gives him name recognition and an advantage over others. The 71-year-old was first elected secretary of state in 1974.

Wisconsin Leftist Secretary of State files for Governor ping
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
That’s like a Kennedy running in Massachusetts.
Or a Daley running in Chicago.
This will be amusing to watch...the unions already picked their candidate and LaFolette is either going to have to agree to that crippling union pledge to get their support or fight them himself.
If the unions renege on Falk then they come off looking like idiots.
This gets more and more fun...
Not that stupid Douche-Bag!
In high school we learned about 1920’s American socialists like Robert LaFollette and Norman Thomas.
Must be Comrade Bob’s grandson.
Doug is about as charasmatic and exciting as dried mud.
The potted plant constituency is no doubt thrilled...not that you’d know by looking at them.
Great-grandnephew to be precise.
No. He is a distant cousin, but he changed the spelling of his name to capitalize on the history of his famous shirt tail relative. Probably half of WI thinks he's the grandson. He's actually a nasty piece of work who should be thrown out on his tail. One of my friends owns a summer cottage in Door County near Mr. LaFollette's summer home. My friend erected a flag pole at the edge of his patio facing the Lake where he flies the US Flag. (perfectly legal) Mr. LaFollette came to my friend and TOLD him to move his flage and pole "back into the woods where nobody can see it." My friend declined, but can you imagine a state elected officer saying such a thing? Ostensibly, Mr. LF was intervening because my friend's direct neighbor in Door County (union teachers from Illinois) claimed that the clanging of the cables holding the flag aloft was "giving her a nervous breakdown). Mr. LF was "protecting" her. Then, he caused so much trouble by now publishing the new laws Walker signed allowing unions to rush new contracts into effect. Now those school districts had to lay off emplyees and got no benefit of cost savings by looking for new insurance (cheaper than the union owned insurance company).
I lived in Green Bay as a kid 1958-62. I remember Door County as a neat place to go fishing.
Wisconsin seems to be one of those mostly rural & small town states that are dominated by liberal urban politics, like Illinois, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina (I’ve lived in S.C. since 1972). Racine & Madison pretty much own a state where most of the population likes to hunt and fish.
