EL PASO, Texas (Reuters) - A woman pushing her child in a stroller in downtown El Paso, Texas, was struck by an assault rifle bullet fired from across the border in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on Tuesday, mayor John Cook said.
After Juarez police responded to a carjacking about half a mile from the border, a gunfight broke out between police and the carjackers, Cook said. A bullet -- a type used in assault weapons such as M16s -- penetrated and exited the woman's calf, he said.
The unidentified woman, 48, who was shopping, was treated at a hospital and released with minor injuries, and her child -- whose age Cook did not know -- was not hurt, he said. The mother, a Mexican citizen, is a legal U.S. resident living in El Paso, Cook said.
"I don't think there's any reason for El Pasoans to panic or for anyone else to panic," Cook said. "El Paso still remains a very safe large city."

Yep, sounds like it.
You have to be crazy to go near the border.
St00pid reporting. Because the round recovered was .223 (5.56 mm) doesn't mean that it's an "assualt rifle bullet."
AKA - an extremely common type of bullet used in a wide variety of pistols & rifles ...
I live here, traveling on I-10,near the University is a little nerve wracking!
It is so close and it makes one think about stray rounds! By the way Mayor Cook is a demo tool!
Here even the Mexicans will warn you about going into Mexico or near there..The stupid spring break kids are still going after being warned to stay away.they have also told them if they do go to stay near the Hotels..
And Hillary will tell you America is to blame for any and all violence in the third-world pisshole known as Messico.
You are right on with that comment, If you are a non bilingual gringo you are out of luck!
You are right but not just Hillary...I would love to see just one of those idiots walk down a street in Mexico without security..
Yeah. Yeah. There was a gunfight with assault rifles between the bad guys and the cops. No doubt someone walked out and fire a .222 Winchester down the street as a warning to the others to be quiet because he couldn’t hear his telenovelas.
“The city of El Paso is only nominally under U.S. sovereignty. This incident was merely one Mexican national shooting another Mexican national in de facto Mexican territory..”
We laughed at the Russian who predicted the US would break up soon. Now, I fully expect it within the next 20 years.
Anyone know what percentage of shooting victims are innocent passersby to criminal shootouts?
Apparently the woman in this case is okay, and thankfully the child in the stroller was not hit.
The cases that get me the angriest are the shootouts between rival gangs that end up killing some little kid or any innocent passerby.
Technically, she would be mostly correct when you consider Fast and Furious. More to the point, der Fuehrer, Holder, et al, rather than America as a whole are to blame but that will never see the direct light of day unless the GOP representatives grow some nads. Naw, never happen.
I guess it could also be said that America, or at least some Americans, are to blame for electing democrats or not voting for whatever reasons and allowing more votes for democrats.
El Paso has 700,000 residents and another 50,000 or so Mexicans in the city at any given time. With a population of 3/4 million there were 14 murders in 2011 and 5 murders in 2010.
It is crazy to cross the border. The US side is much safer than most large cities for now. I wonder how many people get hit by stray bullets in New York or Detroit.
The woman was “struck by an assault rifle bullet....”
The author is to be congratulated on his amazing psychic powers; he is, at the very least, clairvoyant.
One wonders, then, why he did not identify the perpetrator to the police.
