"I'm not a manager. I'm not a visionary," he told the crowd in an apparent reference to his GOP rivals Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. "I'm a guy from a steel town who grew up understanding what made this country great and for the years that I've been involved in public life, put my heart and my effort on the line to make this country the kind of country that we all want to hand on to our children and grandchildren."
Santorum also touched on the fight over who's the real "Washington insider," saying the only reason Romney wasn't a Washington politician is because he lost his Senate race in 1994.
"You hear a lot of talk about who's the insider and who's the outsider in this race. There's a guy that's outside of Washington, who was not a senator or a congressman not because he didn't try but because he never got elected," he said. In contrast, Santorum added, he was someone who was "an outsider when he was inside" Washington.

You can say that again, Ricky.

When God calls you to run... you don't have to worry about nominal conventions like telling the truth...
You are a sick groupie. You should seek help.
I don’t know where you are getting your definitions - but the way visionary is used in the parlance of leadership is not how you defined it. I can define fag as cigarette or as homosexual man. You have to understand context, and clearly you did not.
What are you? Accountant? Bureaucrat? Lawyer?
You totally miss the point, but anyone who thinks Santorum-Huckabee would be a good ticket is not someone whose opinion I have respect for.
Your boy man way indeed win. And if he’s the nominee, I’ll vote for him. But when he’s a friggin disaster of a nominee, an embarrassment and a loser, you will take the blame and not me. I am warning you, the nation will vomit this little pugnacious sweater vest wearing faux conservative out in massive numbers in the general election and we will all pay the price.
Ok, let’s assume you are right, that I am as arrogant as the guy I support. Fine.
A case could be made that you are as shallow, nerdy, and untalented as the guy you support.
I’ll agree on all counts so we can wrap this little debate up with agreement.
Two of the dummest statements EVER by any candidate, that I can remember.
So, he is going to keep the CZARS to do his managing?
So, he has NO VISION for AMERICA?
We are in a Spirtual Battle as he says, but that alone will not be a WINNER. What we need now is a BOLD VISIONARY LIKE NEWT GINGRICH, who can also outmanage the best of them and force them like it, at least we will.
Engineer. The way I see visionary used regarding leadership is “Visionary Leader”. But the noun definition of Visionary #7 I would have thought was a reasonable definition as you were suggesting to define it.
Since Santorum was taking a dig at his political opposition, the “context” clearly suggests you should take one of the negative connotations of “visionary”. Your argument that we WANTED a visionary assumes the positive definition of the term, which would be inapplicable to the context.
Which was the point I was trying to make in a humorous way — that there are many definitions of “visionary”, many of them have a negative connotation, Santorum was using that negative connotation to take a mild dig at Gingrich, and those who claimed he was saying he had no vision were the ones taking the comment out of context.
Now putting the Newt and Santorum thing aside for a second, I find your response fascinating - and I mean mostly in a good way.
That you are an engineer makes a ton of sense - you are very literal and very much a B type personality on this forum. That such a person is somewhat off put or offended by someone like Newt is also very much predictable.
What is not predictable is that you meant anything humorous in your post. Santorum is a perfectly humorless person from all I can tell, and I have spoken with him one on one for quite a while as well as observed him for 20 years off and on.
Thus, when he takes a light dig - a very literal person without a sense of humor who has followers mostly the same - that humor is going to be lost on many. I sure did not see it.
And your best friend is your own opinion. :-)
I wouldn’t know if Santorum is humorous. I can’t judge whether I am humorous, as that is really in the mind of the recipient. I can only say I was attempting to answer in a somewhat humorous fashion, rather than an accusatory, or condescending, or malicious fashion.
I won’t agree or disagree with your assessment of my personality type — I may have multiple personalities, and compartmentalize based on the venue. :-)
I would actually expect I’d feel equally “put off” by Santorum as Newt; I simply haven’t observed Rick claiming as much credit for being so smart as I have Newt. I’ve actually thought I’d rather eat dinner with Newt than Rick, I think it would be a lot more fun.
I’m not really opposed to Newt, relative to Rick. Either would be fine with me; I simply at this moment see Rick having a less bumpy path to beat Romney than Newt, because of unfavorability and past history. But I don’t feel confident enough to actually urge people to drop Newt and support Rick; remember, I was nominally a Perry supporter, although I never felt comfortable enough with his chances either to urge others to support him.
Anyway, you caught me in one of my “stop needlessly antagonizing people” moods — of course when I’m in an “antagonizing” mood, it is always needful :-)
Interesting. Couple quick thoughts:
Rick S is not nearly as smart as Newt - and you have to remember, there’s a ton of folks talking about Newt’s smarts besides Newt. So it’s not just him.
And being humorless and humorous are not necessarily direct antonyms. Being humorless is a state of mind, being humorous and not humorous is the ability and perception notion you mentioned. Rick is humorless in that he is simply without humor period. Rush Limbaugh might be humorous or not depending on your point of view, but no one would call him humorless.
And as for bumpy road, you may be right, though I am not sure I agree totally. Newt has obstacles, but he does have tremendous ability. I don’t see Rick has having the obstacles or the ability.
A misfired attempt at humility? 3 squirms out of a possible five on that one.
