Billionaire Sheldon Adelson Says He Might Give $100M To Newt Gingrich Or Other Republican

I'm against any and all contribution limits. If Adelson or Soros wants to give all his earthly possessions to the candidate of his choice, let him.

That said, I have to wonder what Adelson might want or demand in return.

“I have to wonder what Adelson might want”

The simple reason Adelson supports Gingrich is Newt’s
long-life stand for US - Israel strong allies, cooperation and friendship relations.

In 1995, Speaker Gingrich introduced the “Jerusalem Embassy Act”:

Declares it to be U.S. policy that:

Jerusalem remain an undivided city in which the rights of every ethnic religious group are protected;

Jerusalem be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel;

the U.S. Embassy in Israel be established in Jerusalem no later than May 31, 1999.

Makes specified amounts of such funds available until expended in FY 1996 and 1997 only for construction and other costs associated with relocating the U.S. Embassy Jerusalem.

Corresponding House bill is H.R.1595. Became Public Law No: 104-45, signed into law by president Clinton.

Source: Bill sponsored by 77 Senators and 78 Reps on Oct 13, 1995.

Since then presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama, although they all promised to implement the bill during the presidential campaigns , once elected they systematically postponed moving the Embassy to Jerusalem.

Newt Gingrich position (taken long BEFORE Andelson started to give money to the pro-Gingrich super PAC):

“Respect Each Sovereign Nation’s Choice of its Capital. Each sovereign nation, under international law and custom, may designate its own Capital. Accordingly, the U.S. State Department should be instructed to respect the choice of each sovereign nation and place the American embassy in their Capital. (Israel is the only country the United States discriminates against in this regard. The people of Israel have designated Jerusalem as their capital. Yet the United States retains its embassy in Tel Aviv.)

After being sworn to office, in my first day as president, I will sign an executive order to the State Department to immediately move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem”
