Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum promised Monday to revive manufacturing, cut taxes and shrink government, pledges that drew loud applause from conservative Michigan voters who said he was more in line with their values than native son and GOP rival Mitt Romney.
Santorum's growing connection with Michigan conservatives risks embarrassing Romney in his home state. Romney was counting on a strong finish in Michigan's presidential primary on Feb. 28 to carry him into the big, multistate round of voting a week later on Super Tuesday.
But Santorum, fueled by a recent trio of victories and sensing an opportunity to upset or at least bloody Romney with a strong primary finish of his own, is charging hard at a state that he says shares many of the same characteristics as his blue-collar state of Pennsylvania. Santorum pledged Monday that, under his administration of less government and more individual freedom, "manufacturing jobs will come back here to Muskegon."

Santorum’s op ed in the Detroit news today laying out some of his his economic plans.
This is hand-waving nonsense.
Define "manufacturing base". How much manufacturing is necessary to constitute a "manufacturing base" and thus enable a "strong economy".
Some people simply can't distinguish between rational economic reasoning and demagogic sloganeering. I wonder if perhaps you are one such person.
He spent the day stoking up the union base for which he is a proponent while promoting himself as a socon - which will not work.
Didn’t work in PA either. Where Rick goes in Michigan says more about WHAT he says.
China is one of the most important countries in the world. America and China should grow and prosper together. The only way to do that is if both countries abide by the same set of rules. Unfortunately that has not yet happened.
That's why we need a zero tax rate for manufacturing activity. Manufacturing is vital, and it's disadvantaged in America because of China's policies. We need to give our homegrown industry some help.
There is no logical thread there whatsoever. It reads like the China Daily. "Because we say so this is what we're going to do." What a disgrace!
I dunno, why don't you ask your ChiCom friends that question. How's the weather in Beijing?
The real hand-waving nonsense, is ignoring the 23% unemployment, rate while chanting that a manufacturing base isn't important in a free market economy.
Wasn't it Einstein who said that insanity is repeating the same actions over and over again and expecting a different result.
We've tried free trade with unequal trading partners such as communist china and it didn't work. It strengthened our enemies and weakened and indebted us.
Let's try what the founding fathers did, and use tariffs to fund our government and protect our markets except where free trade really is in both countries benefit and not just the underdeveloped one.
On a thread full of ignorant, dissembling retards you have, with one short post, crowned yourself king.
Congratulations.
Granholm is out bashing Romney today because he had a alternative method of GM restructuring - Granholm obviously supports stealing ownership of the shareholders and giving ownership of GM to the unions and railroading a century of bankruptcy law.
I’m undecided as of this moment but it’s just PATHETIC that none of these cowards has not tried to bounce their campaigns against Jenny who has fled the state.
Just absolutely inexcusable.
What part of the 2010 elections here do not these campaign advisors get?
“I wish Santorum would ditch this revive manufacturing nonsense.....It makes him look like he doesnt understand free markets, free trade, and limited government.”
I am SO SICK of everything I buy these days being made in China. I actually get happy when I find something made in Mexico. IF “Free Markets” means a continued influx of Red Chinese goods that are short term “painless” but in the long term set us up for Chinese World dominence. Then I guess I’m against “free markets.” We MUST bring manufacturing BACK to North America and STOP Chinese economic warfare which is financing a large bigup of Chinese Military might in the Pacific like the Japenese leading up to WWII.
I’m willing to pay more and bring work back. So, IF that isn’t being for “free markets”...so be it.
Your post is almost completely incoherent, and where it isn’t it is flat out wrong.
I did not say that a manufacturing base was unimportant. What I said is that manufacturing should not be subsidized. You can’t tell the difference between these two ideas because you are stupid.
You claim that high unemployment shows we need manufacturing jobs. This is stupid. What we need is jobs. If a company cannot stay in business without handouts then those jobs aren’t really jobs, they are welfare programs.
You say that “we’ve tried free trade with unequal trading partners such as communist china and it didn’t work”. If you were smarter you’d realize that this statement is utterly meaningless since you don’t define “free trade”, “unequal”, and “didn’t work”. If you actually have an intelligent observation to make about our trade with China then do so already.
Protectionism is an idea that has come and gone. The only reason Santorum is bringing it back (though in an underhanded way) is because he is trying to win votes through pandering. That and he’s an economic ignoramus like you.
The result of tariffs is to take money from all American consumers and redistribute it to certain American industries chosen by government. This makes the connected few richer and the unconnected many poorer. If you support this then you are a corrupt sleazebag no different than Obama.
So buy something else.
IF Free Markets means a continued influx of Red Chinese goods that are short term painless but in the long term set us up for Chinese World dominence. Then I guess Im against free markets.
The key to saying smart things is to explain in rational, objective terms why you want what you want. The cost of manufacturing certain goods in China today is lower than making those same goods here. So why exactly does it weaken America if an American pays less for shoes made in China and then has the extra money to spend on something else?
We MUST bring manufacturing BACK to North America...
Why?
...and STOP Chinese economic warfare which is financing a large bigup of Chinese Military might in the Pacific like the Japenese leading up to WWII.
What is "economic warfare"? Do you mean "competition"? Competition is part of reality. We can't stop it. The Chinese have every right to manufacture stuff and sell it. If they are violating trade agreements then that is something we should take up with them. But if they are just working hard and trying to get rich then so what? Why shouldn't they?
Im willing to pay more and bring work back. So, IF that isnt being for free markets...so be it.
Do what you want with your money. Leave my money alone.
Oddly enough, transportation and labor costs in China are bringing a very limited number of jobs back.
There’s a flat screen TV maker opening a factory near Detroit. They’re specializing in screens over 47 inches and will start with Chinese made components but they are planning to build their own supply chain in the midwest.
Bought a suit recently. The store said cloth is not made for suits in the US anymore.
Come to think of it, I don’t know of any mills anywhere in the US.
So did you get a good suit at a good price?
Is there something else you wanted that you didn’t get?
Why would it surprise everyone that a socialist supports government intervention in the marketplace?
With respect, the government has been meddling in the marketplace for years by punitive taxation of businesses.
Sure, you are being told that the US is going to a more intellectual property, service economy.
Let me tell you from bitter experience. A service economy doesn’t work when people can’t afford the services. Every country needs an actual manufacturing base. We no longer have one, and we are pretty much screwed.
The country that single handedly started the industrial revolution now makes almost nothing itself. Think about that for a second.
If this oddball idea ever becomes law, I guarantee the definition will be a mile wide and an inch deep.
