DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - Leaders of a DeKalb County mosque face legal trouble after mounting code enforcement violations landed them in front of a judge.
Mosque leaders said they are being harassed. Neighbors said its not a story about religion, but about code enforcement and following the rules.
A judge had already put the mosque and its leaders on probation, but that hasn't stopped them from holding services. Attendees arrive by the dozens from around the metro area every Friday. Sometimes there are several hundred people, but their mosque doesn't look like most.
"They would park in my yard and park in a lot of the neighbors yards, and you couldn't get out of your driveway," said Tom Owens, who lives near the Attaqwa Mosque in Doraville.
Owens said with 16 code enforcement violations, the mosque is not a good neighbor.
"It makes my neighborhood look bad when people drive by. It just looks trashy," he said.
Owens was referring to additions built behind the homes. Mosque leaders bought up eight different parcels and expanded.
"They haven't gotten the permits. They haven't had their plans reviewed," DeKalb County spokesman Burke Brennan told Channel 2 Action News.

My fiancee’ the inventor is thinking of building a bacon cannon. Maybe a little southern Saturday night drive by.
I heard that the police chief was told if any minerets appear on that building or “the prettiest sound on earth” starts emanating from them there is going to be a lot of return fire.
A couple hundred well cruised Harleys and Rice Rockets reved to 12,000 RPM cruising the neighborhood will also be considered by some to be ‘the prettiest sound on earth.
460 Fords, 7.3L diesels with Magnaflow exhausts and the like can add a bit of ‘tone’ as well.
There are a thousand legal ways to make their lives there hell. The neighborhood better act on them as much and as often as possible.
You wouldn’t want to be the owner of s car parked in my yard. With the simple irony of a box cutter you’d be in the market for the services of a flatbed tow-truck, 4 tires and a paintshop.
I’m not joking about menstrual blood and pig parts. It’s been done in the UK pre-construction on land ready for a new mosque, and it’s caused cancellations. They pour pigs blood all over the place, and take pictures of the pigs heads etc along with the guts and blood being poured. This simple tactic works on primitive muslim voodoo believers, which is all of them. Tampons and pig blood have caused them to abort mosque construction. Google it. It’s worked in Europe.
Oh so Holder and the DOJ stuck up for them, WHAT a surprise.
I’ll make sure that info gets passed around. There is no shortage of pork in Atlanta.

They are muslims. Why would they care about codes and laws of the United States?? You are all infidels. There only concern for you is that you die.......
If this were a Christian church trying to lay down roots in a Muslim country, it would already have been blown up.
At some point, the rest of America will have to come to the realization that we are being destroyed from within by factions that hate our guts, the enemy within. Obama is the Supreme Leader of this destructive movement, and yes, he IS in cahoots with these muslime slimebags and other segments of our society like the radical OWSers. Bill Ayers and the Weather Underground ain’t got nothin on Obama and his tactics.
When is enough enough?
This is a different one, it’s in Doraville. So we’ve got another one over in Lilburn? Just great! Sheesh.
One of the things, the few things Farrakhan has gotten right is “The Nation of Islam”. We ARE at war, but it’s one sided.
Islam isn’t so much a religion as a Political movement under the guise of a religion. This is one exception to a rule welcoming other religions to practice in our majority Christian Nation.
It’s past time to confront this foreign supported quasi religion with its threatening militaristic presence that is a danger to all non supporters/members, and set them straight as to where they are, and in whose house they are guests.
We have laws. Enforce them. The Muslims aren’t special.
Something doesn’t smell right about this article. If anyone, for any reason, uninvitedly parked in my and my neighbor’s yards, we’d get 5 or 6 of us together and roll those cars into the street. And by roll I mean onto the side, onto the roof, onto the other side, onto the wheels, etc., until in the street they were.
These people have no respect for us. We are infidels, dhimmis. They do what they want. Most of the time nobody stops them.
You’ve got a koranimal infestation there.
The news segment was from three days ago, and mentioned that the mosque leaders were supposed to be back in court Wednesday (I assume the Wednesday two days ago). I wonder what happened?
If a Christian church behaved like that in Egypt, the military would have shown up, had tanks knock the place down, and Islamic rioters would have slaughtered the worshipers.
They might be thinking that the crazies would come back some night and torch the houses.
Given the proximity to the pipeline and storage tank, maybe complaints to the Department of Homeland Security? I’m also one who believes in the efficacy of pig products-—what about a BBQ fundraiser in your yard, if not for your legal fees in fighting this then on behalf of our troops in Afghanistan or our wounded warriors? Put flyers on the windshields of all the illegal parked cars with a special invitation for them to attend. Schedule the BBQ for Friday night.
If you can’t get permits for an official fundraiser, invite some Rolling Thunder friends over for a “quiet” BBQ; ask them to bring their motorcycles and to test them around the call of the muzzerain (sp?).
A Marine in Iraq had a blog in which he developed a new religion called (I think) Americology, in which one main doctrine was to blast as loudly as possible the Star Spangled banner, God bless America, and other such music whenever the call to prayer on Friday and Saturday is heard.
