Gingrich: I could lose Georgia

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Wrapping up a four-day fundraising swing through California, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich shifted his focus to the state he once represented in Congress but said he's unsure he can win the Georgia primary.

"Look, given this kind of a year, who knows?" Gingrich told reporters outside of a Beverly Hills restaurant when asked if he could lose his home state in the "Super Tuesday" sweepstakes on March 6. "Romney could lose Michigan. Santorum could lose Pennsylvania. Who knows what's going to happen?"

The former House speaker and 10-term congressman from Georgia was dealt a setback today when CNN cancelled the one debate scheduled in the state before the primary. The debate was scrapped after the three other presidential candidates - former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas - all announced they would not attend. Gingrich, who has benefitted from strong debate performances, took a swipe at two of his rivals for backing out.

"I think what you've got right now is for very different reasons, Romney wants to hide behind negative ads," he said. "And I think that if he doesn't want to (debate), Santorum doesn't want to do it because Santorum thinks he's in the hunt with Romney. And that's fine. There are lots of different ways to communicate to the American people."

Gingrich on Thursday wrapped up a fundraising blitz that included eight fundraisers in the Golden State. Eric Beach, one of the campaign's national finance chairs, said Gingrich was able to raise $2 million in California, though he could not say how much of that was pledged this week. "We've been raising money. We've had a pretty good week so far, "Gingrich told reporters following a forum with Asian-Americans at the Korea Times Thursday morning.

Gingrich is set to return to a schedule heavier on campaign events, with upcoming stops planned in Oklahoma, Arizona and Michigan.

I like him, but he is being attacked out of the competition which is a shame.

It’s time for Newt to go.

What a misleading headline. He said all three candidates might lose their home states.

Only if the American people allow the bully to win. Sooner or later the Bully gets hi put down. Just pray it’s sooner.

Newt’s right. With this year (shut out by the MSM AND his own party!) who knows how GA might go? Like Newt said in his tele-townhall tonight...after Super Tuesday, there are still 65% of the delegates available. It’s not close to over for Newt.

Debates were a free forum that helped him get his message out and showcase how tough he can be (ie. how he will handle Obama). If this becomes a battle of one minute adds and PR, he will not have the cash. This is going to be tough.

Mitt will go before Newt goes. He can't keep swinging at two and stay focused.

His money will not buy him the candidacy.

Pull out. Throw support to Rick if you want to stop Romney.

Here's the context to the cBS headline.

Yes, completely misleading.

I like him, but he is being attacked out of the competition which is a shame.

That could be the epitaph on every candidate we like if we don't figure out how to turn the tables on our political foes.

"after Super Tuesday, there are still 65% of the delegates available. It’s not close to over for Newt."

It's more than that. Here in Colorado, despite the beauty contest, NO DELEGATES will be chosen until April 13-14.

I’m shocked Mitt dropped out of the debates, it might do him some good to keep Newt pumped up a bit.

As vicious as all the candidates have been to each other, they could all lose their home states.

Obama is the one that is winning with all this.

I am glad you both responded... I type up a response after I read carefully the thread... fully expecting to read what the ‘headline’ promised...

I figure deception is not only the tool of the left but the right soaks it right up. And at this point I am relieved to read anything that does not have to do with Santorumn’s (sp and I do not care how to sp) birth control policies.

Misleading headline—What a stellar example of what LIARS the media are.

I’m SOOO happy they’ll all be gone within 5 years.

Major networks —gone. Magazines —gone. Major newspapers —gone. Major publishing houses —gone.

What else? The next decade will bring amazing changes.

If Mitt loses Michigan, he's done.

Anyone can vote in the primary in MI and DU and others have been pushing folks to vote for Santorum.

Mitt's anti Santorum message, won't cause folks to switch to him but to vote for Newt.

As long as Newt and Rick are still in Mitt won't get above 3?%

Maine still isn't settled. Uncle Paul has an entire county organized and voting on Saturday. He needs fewer than 200 votes to catch up. Has a very motivated group on the ground, who are challenging totals in other areas too. So Mitt can lose, Maine and Michigan both.

Uncle Paul picks up only a couple more delegates, but Willard looks weaker and weaker. He's already looking desperate.

This play is just beginning. We haven't finished the first act yet. Just a couple of scenes.
