His nickname served Gary Carter well right up to his final days. “The Kid.” Once and always, “The Kid.” As his long-time friend Dave Van Horne says, even when it became clear that Mr. Carter’s battle with a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer was being lost, if a baseball person ran into him, it was the same. It was always, “Hey, how ya doing, Kid?”

Johnny Bench’s successor as baseball’s best catcher. Sorry to hear this - way too young to die.

Gary was a former classmate of mine at Sunny Hills high in Fullerton California (2 years behind me). I’m very saddened by the passing of a great guy!

RIP Gary. As a lifelong Mets fan you gave me a great deal of joy.

Here’s a piece I read a few weeks ago that says it better than I can.

Geez, that just sucks! Last I saw the guy he was a picture of health. At least that’s how I can remember him now.

My sympathy to the family, friends, and associates.

Really sad to hear about this.

Carter and Bobby Ojeda were my two favorites in that 1986 series. Such a loss.

In 1986 I was in my future in-law’s living room watching game six with a whole bunch of fellow Met fans. When there were two out I crouched next to the TV so I could turn it off and not have to watch the Red Sox celebrate.

Then Gary got a hit and I took a step back. Then Kevin Mitchell and I took another step away. Then Ray Knight and I sat down. Then Mookie and history.

That was one of the great moments of unrestrained joy I’ve ever had and without Gary Carter it never happens.

Don’t remember...did Knight score all the way from first on Buckner’s error?

No, Mitchell scored on the wild pitch and Knight moved to second.

That’s one of the funny things about that game, Buckner needs a security detail in Boston, but the game was already tied on Stanley’s wild pitch and he put the winning run in scoring position.

Plus, Mookie’s 57-hopper was the culmination of a 10 pitch at bat.

I saw Gary Carter when he was managing the OC (Fullerton CA) Flyers in the Golden League. He looked like he could still play a innings behind the plate.
