Gingrich banks $2 million over three-day fundraising swing
The Hill ^ | 2-16-12 | Sink

Posted on 02/16/2012 2:04:23 PM PST by VinL

Newt Gingrich raised $2 million during a three-day fundraising stint in California, injecting fresh life into his campaign after a string of tough defeats and money woes had thrown the former Speaker's long-term viability into question.

We're pretty pleased with this," Mike Schroeder, Gingrich's California political director and a former chairman of California's Republican Party, told the Washington Post. "The thing of it is, this campaign has been up and down. We crested out of South Carolina and raised a lot of small-dollar donations. But then Santorum came in, and now we've got a headwind."

The news comes a day after Gingrich benefactor Sheldon Adelson was reportedly considering another multi-million dollar donation to the Super PAC supporting Gingrich's efforts. Adelson is reportedly concerned that Rick Santorum's recent polling surge could upend the GOP race, pushing out his preferred candidate - Gingrich - and Mitt Romney, who the casino mogul sees as a viable alternative in a general election matchup against President Barack Obama.

The influx of cash should help Gingrich as the campaign heads into the crucial Super Tuesday primaries - especially after one of the biggest free media opportunities, the March 1 CNN debate in his home state of Georgia, was cancelled Thursday after the other candidates pulled out.

Gingrich attended at least 8 campaign events across California this week, according to the Post, and has plans for further fundraising efforts in Texas, Tennessee, New York, and Georgia in coming days. A Web ad released Monday explicitly asked supporters to donate to the campaign.

Ron Paul's campaign announcing Thursday that it banked $1.2 million...Rick Santorum estimated last week that he had raised over $1 million in the 24 hours after his surprise wins in Colorado, Missouri, and Minnesota, and more than $3 million for the week.

Test your preferance for a candidate on this simple test:

Would you want to work for Newt, Santorum, Romney or Paul?

IMHO Santorum would judge me on my dress, my marriage, my Church, my personal habits and participate in office politics. He would scoff at any creative ideas.

Romney would judge me on whether I adored him, his family and his Mormonism. He would not accept any ideas that didn’t comport with his.

Paul would laugh at my opinions and effort.

Newt would listen to creative ideas, ask for input, discuss problems and solicit solutions and trust my judgement. He would also share a laugh or two at his own expense.

I know why I like Newt.

Newt is still in this fight and has a right to be there.

In fact, this is a tag team match against Romney and “the machine.”

Santorum has risen and is now under the barrage of nasty advertising that’s liable to drive his poll numbers down.

Romney can’t win.

He must lose everywhere and I hope that happens even if it means pulling the lever for Ron Paul on March 6th in VA.

The GOP insiders have rigged that primary as a Romney-Paul contest with no write-ins allowed.

GO NEWT!!!!!!!!!!

We need to stay onboard with Newt and keep him in the mix. Santorum is going to fade as Romney goes after him and Newt will once again rise.

Santorum’s own record is finally getting out to the impulsive Lemming voters of the party.

And knowing how fast the leads change this season, Newt can absolutely gain the lead back. After the MSM also rips into Santorum, Newt will gain, because there is not many surprises left to hurt Newt with, that they have not already worn out.

That is the only strategy at this point for voters to stop Romney where they can by doing what HAS to be done, including a vote for Ron Paul in the special case of Virginia!

What alternative is there? To not vote IS a vote for Romney, in a Republican primary and this is what the Establishment hopes for.

I think the Left is now Santorum’s biggest problem. They are very scared he might get the nomination. And after seeing Santorum’s record and listening to his media blunders, they are exposing all sorts things about him.

Just go to “Google” under the simple name “Santorum”. You will see a small sample of the kind of things that are starting to come out against him. The things you will see, make Newt look like the Pope.

Santorum’s voting record and spending are enough to scare any conservative. Since he is not going to debate, I recommend that everyone follow your advice and Google him!

That alone should send shivers through the spine of any true conservative and send them running.

This is amazing! Just a few days ago the story was that Newt was dead broke and his backer was heading over to Romney. There was multiple stories about Santorum’s fantastic fundraising. Now Newt has some nice cash and Santorum has pulled out of the March debate.

Let me ask you all a question: Why doesn’t Santorum and Romney pull out of the debate scheduled for next week? As far as I can see, there is absolutely no upside for them, especially Santorum. He’ll get questions about his contraception remarks and no matter what he says it will be spun as right-wing wackiness. If I were him I’d sit on my lead and stay as far away from Newt as I could.

Yeah, I’m real interested to see if Santorum stays in the debate next week. He is going to be absolutely hammered on his contraception/Catholicism beliefs.

Thank goodness some of us haven’t lost our minds and bailed to Rick.

If they have then they reallly don't know much about Newt or how he operates. I think they'll come back once Santorum is vetted, besides Santorum is just the man of the hour and we all know how that goes.
