The average citizen in France and in most Western European countries drives a ton of miles less than the average citizen in the U.S. Reason is that most Metropolitan Cities and routes between cities in France and Western Europe have a public (rail) transportation system that accomodates the majority of commute and travel. Outside of NYC our public system in cities is woefully inadequate and when you get into the rural areas non-existent. An $8.00 dollar per gallon in Europe doesn’t concern the majority of their populations, but in the U.S where we are dependent on the Automobile the price of Gasoline is a very big deal.
