Gingrich expected to draw big crowd Saturday in Cobb

MARIETTA — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is coming home to Georgia this weekend with a campaign rally in Cobb County.

Gingrich, who represented much of Cobb and Marietta in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served as speaker, will speak in southeast Cobb at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest at the Galleria hotel, 200 Interstate North Parkway SE.

The rally is open to the public.

At least 300 people are expected to attend, but Gingrich usually exceeds such campaign estimates, said Susan Meyers, Gingrich’s southeast communications director and a senior communications strategist. The venue, in the hotel’s grand ballroom, is 5,000 square feet.

Former presidential hopeful Herman Cain will be campaigning with Gingrich all day Saturday, Meyers said.

Meyers said she expects Gingrich to give his campaign stump speech to rally supporters in his home state ahead of Super Tuesday, when Georgia and nine other states conduct their primaries and caucuses on March 6. At 76, Georgia has the most delegates up for grabs that day.

“Newt likes to follow what’s going on in the news and see what’s going on in Washington and give a speech predicated on what the mood of the country is,” Meyers said.

Recent polls have shown that Gingrich’s momentum has slowed since beating frontrunner former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21. A new CBS News/New York Times poll showed just 36 percent of Republicans view him favorably, compared to 29 percent who don’t.

Romney’s political action committee, Restore Our Future, has reportedly bought roughly $100,000 of airtime on four TV stations in Atlanta.

But the Gingrich campaign has expressed confidence that its candidate will win his home state.

“They’re wasting their money because Newt is the favorite son, well-loved and well-known in Georgia,” Meyers said. “He represents Southern conservative values, and Georgians have said before that they want a candidate who represents their values. Certainly, a Massachusetts moderate or someone from the northeast is not representative of their values.”

In December, more than 60 federal, state and local officials in Georgia gathered at the state Capitol to throw their support behind Gingrich, including Gov. Nathan Deal, who served in Congress with Gingrich.

However, Deal will not be joining the Gingrich campaign on the candidate’s multiple stops around metro Atlanta on Friday and Saturday due to a prior commitment, but he does plan to hit the trail when Gingrich returns to Georgia on a bus tour later this month, Meyers said.

Among local officials who have endorsed Gingrich are U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey; state Sen. Judson Hill; state Reps. Sharon Cooper, Judy Manning and Matt Dollar; former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr; former state Sen. Chuck Clay and former state. Sen. John Wiles.

Meyers said she expects many Cobb officials who have endorsed him to be at Saturday’s rally.

The Cobb Chamber of Commerce announced Wednesday that Gingrich will also be the guest speaker at its special breakfast meeting on March 1 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, before he takes the stage later that day in a nationally televised primary debate in Atlanta.

Cobb Republican Chairman Joe Dendy, who is prohibited from endorsing a candidate, said he welcomes all of the Republican presidential candidates to visit the county.

“We’re excited about having Newt come to Cobb County for a rally, as we would for any candidate who comes here to have a rally or gather our folks together to let them hear more about what they stand for,” he said.

Wouldn't it be awesome if someone were to ask him for his thoughts relating to the 80% reduction of nuclear warheads and the won's consistent stance in support of Islamic activity at the expense of non-Islamic people everywhere. Why are we funding Hamas, PA, and MB? Why are we reducing our ability to defend ourselves and allies (individually and as a nation) while Islam and Islamic nations are steadily increasing, proliferating, and consolidating their ability to project power? What does he make of creeping Sharia law in courtrooms?

It would also be nice to hear his thoughts relating to the most recent court challenge - of many - to the won's legitimacy to the crown, especially in light of the ever bolder Executive over-reach by this increasingly outright socialist-liberal-Islamic administration. I'm referring the recent courtroom escapades of Judge Malihi.

Maybe a discussion could emerge on the issue of the won's suspicious birth certificates, SS#'s, relationships (the company he kept/keeps), and his fitness to hold the office.

Precisely where is the won's allegiance? Who is he fighting on behalf of, and against whom?

“if someone were to ask him for his thoughts relating to the 80% reduction of nuclear warheads”

Nice timing - Iran is getting the bomb, unrest in almost all Islam countries, and yet our wonderful President thinks we ought to disarm - really scary.

Have to wonder if a traitor is in our midst.

Will Newt get an introduction this glowing? It would be hard to match.

Michele Bachmann profusely praising Newt in this 2008 townhall introduction [3:00] "What a treat! What a treat! This is real. We love you here! We love you!

Hopefully, when they said
“Newt likes to follow what’s going on in the news and see what’s going on in Washington and give a speech predicated on what the mood of the country is,”
they meant it, and will discuss this issue amongst themselves, at least. Has he spoken on the Catholic over-reach yet? Komen and PP? If not, he might.

Makes me wonder; what is the prevailing mood (and among who?), and how is that assessed/should be assessed?

Probably not - after all he is a politician.

On the other hand, we need a leader and have none. We don’t need someone reading the news to determine their position.

We already have way too many of those folks. Sorry, Gingrich is not that leader and unfortunately, none of the other GOP candidates are either...

We have no Reagan, no Thatcher, and no leader stepping forward. This during our defining moment in history - really bad timing...for us!

Well, you may be in the minority here, but that is okay. If you think of Gingrich as a leader the you are welcome to it - even if you are in the minority.

Being a leader means bring along a majority of the population. He has not done that yet and it is doubtful that he could with his record.

Yes, We is a bit generic, but it is truthful....

You are what you are and you know what that is.

You seek to depress the conservative outlook and message.

Your post shows you up. You are the cheerleader for losing... the flat spot in the beer... the dog poop in the doorway.

You hope to deflate the winning trajectory of the conservative rebirth that is happening (oh yes it is... go Tea Party) by demeaning those who fuel that.

I see what you are, hope others here realize that as well. Sorry for you... happy for those of us who see what is good for this country.

I think today, more than ever, we need a President who's able to keep up with what's actually happening in the world and is able to articulate his message accordingly (without changing stances).

Technology allows information to move very freely and quickly, and national sentiment can be swayed or not very quickly. Either the campaign and the candidate is in tune, or not.

Personally, I think Gingrich is our Reagan, our Thatcher; he is the most appropriate fit for this time in global history, in respect to both internal and external policy stance and (expressed) thinking.

I don't think much of politicians, but they are an important part of human activity, and we should strive for the best of what's available in light of current conditions locally and internationally.

No, just discouraged and depressed with our GOP (Conservative?) leaders. I do understand your questioning but after many decades of failure - getting a bit deflated.

Hope you can find and support your candidate though. We do actually need the younger generation to continue to believe and try to change things.

Actually, I would have agreed with you with enthusiasm if it was the Gingrich that I knew in the early 90’s (Leading the Conservative Revolution).

Unfortunately, he has become a patron of money and power, as seems to happen to all politicians. That means that he has to cater to the liberal establishment to advance. Look at his record, his actions, and his statements.

Yes, compared to Obama, he is a saint and very Conservative. That is not the comparison that I look for though.

I may try to get over there, if our GOP caucus is done by 2 or so. I hope it is, we start at 10AM.
