SAN ANTONIO:
In the final moments of Tuesdays redistricting hearing, a three-judge panel said Texas primary elections likely will not occur before May 29.
While Judge Jerry Smith, one of three federal judges in the San Antonio redistricting case, said the likely date of the primaries will be May 29, he did not commit to the date. Smith, however, told the states two major political political parties that they should prepare proposals based on that assumption
The Republican Party of Texas and the Texas Democratic Party will prepare a schedule in the coming days that will include dates for early voting and runoffs. They also will determine when to reopen the filing period for candidates looking to run for office.
Candidate filing was suspended earlier this year as the legal battle over Texas congressional and legislative districts dragged on.
Lawyers for the state and attorneys representing clients that are suing the state over the Legislatures redistricting maps also managed to reach an agreement on an interim state Senate map to be used in the 2012 elections. They still have not agreed upon a state House maps or a congressional map.
Congressional District 25, which is currently occupied by Doggett, D-Austin, remained a major sticking point.

Are Texas voters getting screwed?
Texas deserves to be heard from before May 29, 2012!
PING
Yes, we’re getting screwed.
We were already screwed but now we’re getting screwed worse.
I hate to say it, but if this escalates it could be.. bad things.
Charlie. ;-)
Thanks, onyx, for posting this for me. I have’t posted anything before and I was so shocked at this email I got from The Austin Statesman, I wanted it posted fast and didn’t want to waste time to do it myself.
Our presidential candidates won’t get any delegates from Texas until THE END OF MAY! This is unbelievable. The Newt camp will probably go nuts over this as he’s counting on our 155 delegates to go to him. That, of course, isn’t certain at this point, but to put our primary the last of May is nuts.
I don’t have a voter card, either. Our county is large and part of it is in one district and the other part in another district. The new map puts them together, so we can’t get a voter card until the district lines are in concrete.
Ah, the complications of a Balkinized election map.
Not exactly, but close. It was a Mexican-American Texas Legislature Democrat representative (don't think he is senator, but could be), who filed the law suit. He thought the lines were discriminating against Mexican-Americans.
Our primaries were in March, but this law suit happened, so they moved it to April 3, thinking it would be done by then. Well, it isn't, so now it's May 29.
This is what happens when he courts overstep their legal authority. This whole case is a ponzi scheme to create minority-majority districts to basically FORCE the election of hispanics and blacks.
How is that any more fair than reverse Jim Crow laws?
This whole thing is just ridiculous and really pixxes me off!
Well, it isn’t, so now it’s May 29.
That even maybe optimistic as I’m seeing June tossed out as a possibility.
Super Tuesday was the orginal schedule which would have allowed Texas to be in the first 35% of delegates selected. Pushing it back to Apr. 3 put the percentage to 63%. Now in late May it will be at 85% or higher if it goes into June.
One possibility is to have the Presidential primary split off from the others and that could still be on Apr. 3, but time is critical for that date along with the expense involved.
It appears some 50+ state house district lines are under discussion and I’m sure some state senate districts also. I think Sen. Wendy Davis got his old district back pretty much intact from what I’ve see.
Still a mess.
It’s outrageous and Newt Gingrich is right that the Courts are over stepping their bounds.
This presidential election is so important - and Texas doesn’t vote until May 29??
Our state convention is in June, now immediately after the primary May 29. Not sure they will have enough time to organize for the convention - it takes time for the list of delegates to get to the state and get all the paper work done. Wonder if they are going to move the convention date to later? I’ll know that very soon.
Which one one hand I can understand, who wants to work with a complete idiot but then on the other hand he's not only a complete dork he's also ineffective.
To me the way the map was drawn they were taking it away from the Austin commies and giving it to the Mexicans but there ya go.
Please keep me posted if there is anything we can do. All phone calls I've made to Austin (reps, etc.) about this, just give the run around.
pinging you in case you don’t know this.
and I figured the repukes were trying to get rid of Doggett.
Thing is some don’t want us heard.
At least you’re still ahead of 6 states who aren’t voting until June.
