Any injury which happens to the downstairs help is considered minor unless it results in death. Dismemberment of a servant just does not rise to that level in this administration.
Just another example of “minor” is what happens to others and “major” is what happens to me that is common in our culture.

possible amputation of one or two fingers,... "may have lost some fingers" Seems like that would be pretty easy to establish one way or another, for anyone who can count to ten. Also, I don't think a hospital trip after amputating a freaking body part really counts as "an abundance of caution."

Then there's this, from the updated report at politico44 (http://www.politico.com/politico44/2012/02/white-house-residence-staffer-may-need-finger-amputation-114464.html):
When the man was hospitalized, his injuries were classified as life-threatening, Walls said.

It’s a little bizarre that their first knee-jerk is to try to downplay the seriousness of the accident. As if some kitchen accident actually reflects one way or the other on the President and the “spin” must be “managed”. It’s an accident, fer cryin’ out loud... these things happen, and it is what it is. If it’s a -serious- accident there’s just nothing wrong with saying so.
Now... if on the other hand it was Obama goofing around with a decorative sword or something, and hurt somebody... -that- would call for some spin. And lots of it. :-)

Hmmm... if they’re talking about an amputation that might take place at the hospital, that suggests some other kind of injury, like a crushed hand or something.

They must have needed some extra people in the shredder room in order to respond to subpoenas from Congress. Apparently they didn’t spend enough time instructing them in how to operate the shredders safely.
They need to remember that safety is Job 1. Shredding is Job 2.

Just to be accurate, the correct term for accidental loss of digits or even limbs is not “amputation”, it would be severed or the medical term is “avulsed”. Amputation is only correct when it's done surgically.
