4 months to the California Primary, but fresh after caucus wins in Colorado and Minnesota and in Missouri's non-binding primary, Rick Santorum draws to within a whisker of nominal frontrunner Mitt Romney, 33% for Romney, 31% for Santorum, effectively even, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted for KABC-TV Los Angeles, KPIX-TV San Francisco, KGTV-TV San Diego and KFSN-TV Fresno.
Santorum leads Romney among seniors, among evangelicals, among pro-life voters, among Tea Party members, among those who say they are "very conservative," and in the Central Valley region of California.

Santorum is even competitive in California
Life is good. This is getting really serious now. He just needs to get through the next debate on 22 February like he won the last two debates and he will seal the deal.
And in the Newtered camp there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
I cannot remember that last time that voting in the California Republican primary meant anything. Usually, by the time the California primary rolls around the decision has already been made by New Hampshire and a couple of other states. I suspect that a lot of Democrats will vote for Romney in the California GOP primary and give 0bama the weakest opponent.
I thought I woke up. Obviously I am asleep and still dreaming.
Hey, this means I can see Santorum live finally! Senator, come to the great OC please!
If this keeps up, he’ll get my tea party vote from the heart of California’s conservative Central Valley!!
Newt or Santorum. Either one is fine by me!!
FUMR!! FUBO!!
We have a republic to save!!
I suspect that a lot of Democrats will vote for Romney in the California GOP primary and give 0bama the weakest opponent.
Yes, with our new open primary, if we need CA’s delegates to win, the dems will all vote to give us Romney.
I hope there are enough red blooded conservatives to stop the Dems from crossing over and voting for Romney. I do not think it’s fair for them to vote Romney in june so they can vote Barack in nov. :(
The nice thing about this, is that California is winner take all... by “district” so Romney could theoretically win the state but lose most of the districts and thus most of the delegates.
Are there any Republicans left in California?
Open Primary is CA??
Agreed - I'm happy to see them duke it out and even join on the ticket - just as long as Romney doesn't succeed with his "divide and conquer" strategy. If, as the latest poll suggests, Santorum is indeed competitive with Romney in California, that is very good news indeed.
Nice post, Jim!
If people look real closely, they might be able to see a fat lady in the crowd slowly making her way to the stage. She’s not singing yet, but she does appear, hopefully, to be making her way to the stage.
Thank you, Newt, for your hard work for our country. I appreciate it. But I’ve been a Rick Santorum fan for a long time. I think that the Michigan and California polls are very encouraging.
I don’t like to predict, for I am neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, and my predictions usually stink. But I will say this: The last poll in Ohio was more than two weeks ago. Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum were bunched closely together in that one. I predict that the next Ohio poll will be the next big news for Rick Santorum.
come on newt drop out..dont take voters away from ricky..you cant win.....lol
Vet your candidate--fully--before it's too late.
I cannot believe how stupid the leadership of the California GOP is. Nothing good comes from open primaries.
The democrats are not going to vote against 0bama in their primary. There is no need for them to vote for 0bama in the democrat primary. Of course the democrats will vote for Romney in the GOP primary. A blind man could see this from a mile away.
FReepmail Antoninus to be added or removed.
I had thought people would've wised up about vetting candidates and had enough of Senators wanting to be president. Even in my abject pessimism, I was too optimistic.
I should've known better.
This is awesome. Santorum is the best candidate we could choose- a guy of substance and ideas whose personal life holds up to his words.
