Santorum moves ahead in Michigan (Santorum 39, Romney 24, Paul 12, Gingrich 11)
Public Policy Polling ^ | 2/13/12 | staff

Rick Santorum's taken a large lead in Michigan's upcoming Republican primary. He's at 39% to 24% for Mitt Romney, 12% for Ron Paul, and 11% for Newt Gingrich.

Santorum's rise is attributable to two major factors: his own personal popularity (a stellar 67/23 favorability) and GOP voters increasingly souring on Gingrich. Santorum's becoming something closer and closer to a consensus conservative candidate as Gingrich bleeds support.

Santorum's winning an outright majority of the Tea Party vote with 53% to 22% for Romney and 10% for Gingrich. He comes close to one with Evangelicals as well at 48% to 20% for Romney and 12% for Gingrich. And he cracks the 50% line with voters identifying as 'very conservative' at 51% to 20% for Romney and 10% for Gingrich.

Santorum's benefiting from the open nature of Michigan's primary as well. He's only up by 12 points with actual Republican voters, but he has a 40-21 advantage with the Democrats and independents planning to vote that pushes his overall lead up to 15 points. Santorum is winning by a healthy margin in every region of the state except for Oakland County, where Romney has a 40-26 advantage, and the area around Lansing where Paul actually has an advantage at 30% to 27% for both Romney and Santorum.

I hate to be a wanker, but this pathetic: “Nobody can beat Obama” crap is...well, crap!

Good grief, I feel like I'm listening (reading) the words of John “Weepy” Boehner, or Mitch McConnell. It's this very attitude by are so-called leaders that has them completely neutered and ineffectual.

Sorry, but either Santorum or Newt could kick Obama’s skinny Kenyan arse all over the Washington Mall.

Time for Newt to get out. I was a big Newt supporter. But because of his tendency to self destruct. I’m on board with Rick.
If Mitt wins I’m with him.
Lets get the true contest of Santorum vs Romney and we’ll have a strong candidate to defeat the Marxist in Nov.

Note how PPP spins this solely as a Newt losing support, not as Romney melting away, of course.

I’m a Santorum supporter but think Newt should stay in to pull votes from Romney in the south.

Catholics vs. Mormons (descendants of imprisoned polygamists from 1880s) in Michigan. No contest!

Does this mean you are going to run out to Wal-Mart and buy yourself a collection of sweater vests to boot?

“President” Santorum will likely fire Congress and all Democrats the moment he takes office too, fer sher. And abolish Secularism. Now that's change the rest of America will gladly accept! /s (rolling eyes.)

Are you old enough to remember when Reagan could never beat Carter?

That was actually the 'conventional wisdom' until late October, 1980.

I'd rethink your pessimism, if I were you.

(And don't say Santorum is no Reagan. That's not the point. Most people didn't know that Reagan was Reagan in 1980, so it wasn't a factor).

“...but he has a 40-21 advantage with the Democrats and independents planning to vote that pushes his overall lead up to 15 points.”

I think this should end the argument that only Romney can win independents.

This comment is truly insane. Unbelieveable that anyone other than a hardcore leftist would ever say such a stupid thing.

Did you know that Huntsman is Mitt’s cousin? (Think the grandfather with five wives in Mexico)
The Huntsman family fortune is intertwined with Bain/Romney. Huntsman was a STRAW candidate to collect the ABR vote in NH.

Considering his on-off debate results, I definitely am not of the view Newt would necessarily win against Obama in the debates.

Santorum winning in Michigan would be Romney's death knell.

West Michigan is a pocket of thecountry that is VERY VERY conservative. Way back in 1964, when Lyndon Johnson clobbered Goldwater in a 60%-40% landslide, Ottawa County had its own landslide, 60-40 for Goldwater. It’s also crawling with tons of social conservatives...benefitting Santorum.

Romney may have been born in Michigan, but he was in the Detroit area, outstaters barely know him. And his Dad was Governor in ancient history, the mid-1960’s, a generation and a half ago.

‘Democrats and independents planning to vote that pushes his overall lead up to 15 points’

Dems and Independents will vote for Santorum? What does that tell you?

This tells you Santorum is no conservative!

These Dems are intentionally pushing Santoprum whom they think will lose to obama, then they will vote for obama in the GE!
Vote for a big gov conservative at your own risk.

Ties between the families have been irrevocably severed. Jon can’t stand Mitt now, and neither can his father for that matter.

I will vote for Rick Santorum, but he will lose to Obama. Newt is the only one who take the fight to him and win. This time of the campaign is where we win or lose. I am saddened to think women will choose on the basis of looks and their precieved view of someone’s heart. Makes me wonder if they should vote at all.

A Romney loss in Michigan would be a very good thing.

It would be a disaster for Mittens. Believe me, he does not even have a contingency that assumes a loss there. If this happens expect ramped up talk of a "brokered convention" with La Raza assclown Jeb Bush pimped on us.

Primary results from 08. Romney beat his ideological twin by less than 10 in a very crowded field. In 08 there were still at least 5 candidates in the race when it came to Michigan. (I voted for Hunter)
