A new poll finds Rick Santorum leading in Tennessee, a concerning sign for both Mitt Romney, who hoped the former senators bubble would be short-lived, and Newt Gingrich, who is counting on a Super Tuesday sweep of Southern states to help him claw back into the race for the Republican nomination.
Santorum drew 34 percent of likely Republican voters, versus 27 percent for Romney. Gingrich polled third in the state with 16 percent a disappointing number for a state that borders Georgia, which he represented for 20 years in Congress, and just 3 points higher than Ron Paul. Just 9 percent of Tennessee voters described themselves as undecided.
The news is particularly troubling for the former Speaker, who has seen his support among strong conservatives defect to Santorums campaign. Santorum pulled 36 percent of self-identified Republicans, versus 28 percent of those who identify as part of the GOP going for Romney. Gingrich only polled 28 percent of self-identified Republicans.
Among Tea Party voters, Santorum pulls nearly double Gingrichs support, leading 40 percent to 21 percent. Romney only narrowly trails Gingrich now among Tea Party voters, grabbing 17 percent on his own.
Other core constituencies that used to buoy Gingrich such as men are also now leaning toward Santorum. Santorum is the choice of 3 in 10 men, versus 23 percent who pick Romney and 18 percent for Gingrich.
Tennessee will vote March 6, along with nine other Super Tuesday states, and will award 58 delegates to the GOP convention.
I’m a Santorum supporter but Gingrich needs to stay in this race. He’ll still do better in other southern races while denying those delegates to Romney.
Crazy, must be the Rush bump.
And just who conducted that “poll”. I’ll soak my britches in gasoline and jump in hell if Santorum OR Willard the liberal wins the state of Tenn. Notice in the so-called poll that
Willard the liberal doubles up on Newt’s numbers. And a cat’s got a carberator and I believe in the tooth fairy.
Santorum will peter out in the South. Good guy...nerd!
We shall see....
I’m leaning towards Newt too, and a Rick win won’t be that bad but the objective here is to get rid of Myth. I’m not a sweater guy either..looks faggy to me.
A news story about a poll, without naming the poll. Or am I missing something? This may be the latest PPP dem poll, which had Newt losing SC by 15 pts a day before... the media is really doubling down on Newt... stay strong.
The way this race has been going I wouldn’t place that high of a bet.
Bookmark for later to remind you of your post if Newt does not win Tenn.
He is the new non-Romney with no personal life baggage.
Why would the liberal Willie Mitty who hates us Cracker Conservatives in TN think he would do well here ???
In 2008 people were foled and didnt vet him veery well..
They thought it quacks like a chicken so it must be a duck...
he came in 3rd with 23.62% of the vote after Huckabee and McCain...
He got 8 delegates out of 52...
This time people know him better...
He shouldnt do as well..
Santorum is on the ballot in TN but has no delegates running. Gingrich has a full slate statewide and in my CD. This is from 2008 but it's still not clear.
http://susan-lynn.blogspot.com/2008/02/tennessee-republican-primary-explained.html A couple of things from
http://www.tennesseerader.com/republican/bylaws/TRP%20Bylaws.pdf:
Section 3. The official campaign of each Presidential candidate earning Delegate and Alternate positions shall offer Alternate positions to those persons who unsuccessfully sought election to be Delegates, having already met the approval of that Presidential campaign. Each such Delegate candidate shall be offered the right of first refusal to a position as an Alternate to a seat for which he was a candidate, in descending order based on the popular vote count. If all of the positions for a candidate's Alternates are not filled from among such candidates for Delegate, the Presidential campaign shall then choose any bona fide Republican as such Alternate.
Strangely there is no similar statement for filling original delegate slots if there are none to be drawn from in the primary. There is also this from Section 8:
If any provision of this Rule causes a mathematically impossible result, the Executive Committee is hereby authorized to modify the provision so that a mathematically possible result occurs.
Which tells me that the Executive Committee would *not* be bound to appoint Santorum delegates if Santorum wins the primary.
Santorum has had a free pass...just wait until Tenn. knows who the real Santorum is...his record is not that of a fiscal conservative.
