Mitt Romney wanted to use his CPAC speech Friday to allay concerns about his candidacy on the Republican right, but with one ad-libbed word he reinforced conservative fears that hes not one of them.
I was a severely conservative Republican governor, Romney told the annual gathering.
The response was immediate. Severely? I have never heard anybody say, Im severely conservative, Rush Limbaugh noted on his show.
That didnt get a lot of applause, firebrand Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) observed with a tight smile.
Some things are too funny to comment on, a laughing Newt Gingrich commented as he walked into the conference to give his own speech.

Romney reminds me of Al Gore.
“I invented conservatism.”

Romney says he is "severely Conservative" and there is an implication that your typical Conservative promises to use big government to give goodies to everyone, and Romney isn't one of them -- he's severe.
Romney understands Conservatives about as well as Bush did.
I just listened to Santorum’s speech. The man rambles. He is just so BORRRRRING. (And I didn’t care that he uses his kids to get votes.)
Sorry, can’t support him. He’s nice, has a nice family but he is in over his head.
Newt gave the best speech. He is an inspiring speaker. I AM WITH NEWT.
It wasn’t “severely”, but another term he’d seen once ~ as in a dream ~ when one of his sons logged on to FR years ago ~ “HUGH and SERIES” ~ yes, that was the term “HUGH and SERIES”, but, as the stress marks rotated through his right cheek, almost invisible under the plasticene implants, “How”, he asks himself, “Do you pronounce ‘HUGH’”?

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party
over to the traitors in the battle just ended.
We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged
to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support.
Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates
wouldn't make any sense at all.""
-- President Ronald Reagan
Good comparison.
This is the kind of thing a person says when they are attempting to appear to be what they are not.
It is a Freudian Slip.
This tells you that Mitt actually thinks of conservatives as severe and that he has no intention of being a conservative president and that he does not consider himself conservative.
And PLEEEZE, did the Santorum kids have a pin with Bella’s picture on it. That’s low.
Did Palin’s kids wear a pin with trig’s picture on it?
And his two sons with their dorky sweater vests? Yikes.
Mittie makes it sound like it was a punishment.
Not in the slightest. They just didn't like him.
Martian robot...
If I break another computer screen because of that darn bug crawling around, I’m sending you the bill;. LOL
I will never vote for the liberal mitt.
[I was a severely conservative Republican Governor ,]
Let’s give the guy a break, I’m sure he meant ‘I was the bestest Republican conservative Governor’.
Kinda' like that "baby" thing Obummer doesn't want his girls punished with. /s
