N. Korea's largest port frozen for 2 straight winters
SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's largest port of Nampo has frozen for the second winter in a row due to a severe cold spell, an environmental research institute said Friday.
The trade port, the marine gateway of the country's capital Pyongyang, is believed to have been frozen since Jan. 6, according to the Korea Center for Atmospheric Environment Research, citing satellite images.
Chung Yong-seung, head of the research institute, said it is rare for the port to freeze two winters in a row, a development he said could have a negative impact on the North's fishing industry.
North Korea's catch reached 663,000 metric tons in 2009, the latest year for which statistics are available, according to the South Korean government data.
A cold snap gripped the Korean Peninsula earlier this month.

From the little information that gets out of North Korea telling about the conditions for ordinary people there, I guess it would be accurate to say, with these ice sheets in place,

Excellent diagnosis comrade...but a few quick observations on your comment:
1. Our beloved North Korea Empire has no more cows. Imperious leader has taken them all for either personal use or for sale so as to purchase rockets to kill Capitalist scum.
2. We have no beans either. They have been sent to exclusively feed our front-line shock troops so they can stay strong and kill Yankee Imperialist invaders.
3. There are no plans to replace our cows or grow more beans. Imperious leader is too busy for such trivialities such as feeding the peasants or keeping the lights on. Meatless diets makes our common citizens free of heart disease while darkness makes our commandos more dangerous.
4. For the offense of “suggesting a solution” without proper authorization from headquarters, the Central Committee of Justice sentences you to 20 years hard labor at a joyful re-education camp. Please report immediately to your nearest police station for processing.
