Times have changed. Now we have a zillion kids with degrees and no common sense or, more importantly, a good work ethic.

Times are always changing. In the 80s everyone lined up for MBA degrees and then there was a glut of those degrees. The problem for teachers & parents is that no one knows where the future jobs will be. The huge debts we saddled our kids with are because they don't get proper guidance & advice because few people really have good advice and are instead told they can be "whatever they want to be". Further, colleges are hugely guilty of gouging students, parents and America through this horrible open-ended student loan program. The bubble is going to blow and so many kids saddled with huge debt have gone "off the grid".

Imagine my surprise when it turned out the main thing that I was qualified for was to get another degree and teach Political Science to other people, who would, in turn, teach it to other people! This wasn’t higher education, this was Amway with a football team! - Richard Jeni - 1957 - 2007

If she gives Uncle Sam 4 years of her life then I think the US Military has a Student Loan re-payment program.

I believe that in most (if not all) cases, the military won't pay for student loans incurred prior to enlistment. I think the most the military can do is arrange for some interest adjustments. Furthermore, people with bad credit are finding it much more difficult to enlist.

Electrical Engineering (if he can hack it) is the way to go. Wife of Mechanical Engineer and mother of another ME and a Dr. of Materials Science Engineering.

Not that that is easy, but there are still good wages offered for those degrees.

She should have went to welding school or diesel mechanics school or Power Plant school or engineering school.

Shoot! Even truck driving school would have been better than what she has!

During my life I have come into contact with a number of psychologists. It’s my sad duty to report that with the exception of one or two of them, they were all bigger ding-bats than many of their patients.

I know it's probably unfair to the .00005% of psychologists who aren't mentally screwed up wrecks but I take anyone having a degree in this field as a giant screaming red flag warning sign.

“...and likely registered Democrat”

I would bet her loan debt on it.

I worked my way through school. Started at the local community college then transfered to a state university. Had a husband, a young child, went to school days and worked nights. Paid cash for everything.
After I graduated with a Bachelors in Business with an emphasis in Accounting I had plenty of Job offers but took one at a major online university as a headhunter for faculty.
In that position I received psych and sociology majors resumes all day every day. They were a dime a dozen and I used to tell them so.

Why go to an expensive private college where you have to borrow $$$ to get a degree in psychology, no less?

After Sammartino graduated from La Salle University with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. she had no luck getting a job. She then made the decision to go back to school, hoping that a Master’s degree would bring in more job opportunities.

Great! Now Jennifer can sit down, look in the mirror and figure out why she so stupidly borrowed far beyond her means, squandered the money stupidly, on an overpriced useless intangible product that is impossible to resell even if she could find a sucker dumber than her.

Psychology should help her figure out why she made those decisions. Then she can use psychology to make her "do you want fries with that" more effective, pleasing the boss and keeping the job she is qualified for, while paying down her debt. (No bankruptcy for you, Jennifer)

Teachable moment:

Let’s say she went to school for 5 years, that comes out to a burn rate of $2.97 per hour. Now she’s got to pay it back.

Wanna bet if she was having to plunk down $71 each and every day of her college existence she might have chosen differently? Like a state university that would have cost half as much? Or a field where there is an actual chance of getting a job?

I laughed out loud at your ‘red flag’ comment. Bingo!

Hope things are going good for you...

I forgot to mention the real reason I took the faculty recruiter job was they offered a degree for free as long as you worked there so I got my Masters for free.

$130,000 for a masters degree in psychology from LaSalle University? She made a bad investment decision. How is that degree more valuable than the local state college?

What we need is risk based lending on the part of student loan lending. The lender actually looks at the market value of the degree they are financing before they agree to lend. Why should taxpayers be at risk to finance a degree in art history?

But we are heading toward the government dictating that all loans will only be made if the borrower agrees to study radical political science.

“Go to trade school and become an electrician or plumber.”

She’s not that smart or talented. People can make fun of electricians and plumbers but they can’t keep up.

No, that will not work either. It would require her to put in a good hard days work rather than sit on her fat behind.

If Ms. Sammartino had done a smidgen of cost/benefit analysis of a degree in psychology, she would have learned that they are a dime a dozen, and qualify you for nothing that a GED doesn't qualify your for.

But it's bigoted to expect someone going to college to have any intelligence.

This lady is looking for a handout when the payments should be within her means as she is employed, even if that means cutting into her booze, vacation, and iphone money. She can consolidate and extend the loan which she is apparently unaware of since that’s exactly what the financial planner recommended.

The problem is that the public schools give poor career or university guidance which results in a surplus of useless degrees and hurts our competitiveness. Not to mention the poor quality of math and sciences in public schools. She could have become an engineer, scientist, or doctor but most students avoid this as it is “too difficult” or “too much work”. I agree with the later statement; fields that are rewarding tend to take quite a bit of work, whether they are in the science, engineering, medicine, entrepreneurship, plumbing, electrical, etc. Americans have become lazy and reliant on the state.

Well... he works for a "business" and I imagine he has to "administer" some paperwork from time to time. By now he must be a "master" at it. So what's the problem? ;-)
