A modern day Faustian bargain

Faust is the main character in a German legend of a smart, important man in the local village that is bored with his life. He decides to call up the devil and make a bargain. In exchange for even more knowledge and power he agrees to sell his soul. This fairy tale like so many others ends happily as Faust is forgiven in the end. This story has been repeated many times from “The Devil and Daniel Webster” to “The Devil went down to Georgia” but it seems the lessons haven’t.

The latest casualty is the Catholic Church. The smart, important leaders of the Catholic Church have over the years supported liberal ideas that seemed to coincide with their teachings. It seemed a healthy symbiotic relationship to help the poor, the illegal’s and the downtrodden as promised by the politicians. In exchange the Church could grow in its influence and prestige. Not only did they support Obama but Obamacare was praised from the pulpits as a Christian thing to do. If Christ is not here to heal the sick the taxpayers will. Well as we all know Obama was elected and Obamacare is the law of the land. Now is the time to give the devil his due. As part of the bill no one read, all employers must offer health insurance benefits including birth control and the morning after abortion pills.

Here in New York all insurance companies are required to offer the same and the Catholic Church has used a loophole in New York State law by self insuring to maintain the teachings of the Church. The current requirement as penned by the ACLU closes that loophole by requiring the employers and not just the insurance companies offer the same benefits. This creates a bind for the 21 hospitals and 15 colleges that are run by the New York Diocese. Do they sell their souls and ignore it like all the “Catholic” politicians they have supported who believe in abortion, divorce and flaunt the vows of the faith. Or is it time to take a stand on the same teachings handed down since 1 AD?

Possibly looking toward the future when all hospitals will be required to provide women’s abortion services under Obamacare they have chosen to stand. They have chosen to stand against the pact they had willingly entered into. The first salvo was a letter to be read in almost all Catholic churches vowing to fight this no matter the consequences. Almost all, since the Catholic’s in the armed forces were prevented from hearing this sermon by the Commander in Chief. With the blessings of the state parishioners in the armed forces were allowed to take home an edited version to read at their leisure.

The Catholic Church is not the only ones to suddenly realize supporting Obamacare had a price they would prefer not to pay. The American Medical Association is just realizing its members will take a 27% pay cut for elder care under Medicaid. (That’s why most appointments for regular exams are now being done by nurses and not doctors) AARP who saw a precipitous drop in membership not offset by the increase in eldercare premiums they hoped for. Even Democrats have to pay like NY’s John Hall or Pennsylvania’s Kathy Dahlkemper who lost their cushy government jobs. Dahlkemper who didn’t even get a golden fiddle admits had she known the price, she would have never supported it.

These groups join the legions of others before them like the intellectuals of Stalin’s day and the students of Mao’s time. When you make a bargain with the devil only in fairy tales and oriental massage parlors is there a happy ending, but there always is a price to pay.

If HHS could demand that all health insurance plans offer free contraception, it would be no stretch to think a similar fiats could be coming mandating insurance plans to pay for abortions, demand that all participating health care providers perform abortions or even that assisted suicide be a covered service. The Catholic Church certainly made a pact with the devil in supporting liberalism. However, the Church has yet to do more than make empty protests. A good start would be to publicly excommunicate Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry and Kathleen Sibelius and state they will defy this order even if it means Obama’s thugs coming to arrest them. I am still irked that the Church is quick to cave for example giving Teddy Kennedy, who had been a staunch advocate for abortion, a Catholic funeral with no less then a a Bishop leading the service.

Sometimes the devil takes many shapes. It just makes me wish voters would read the fine print before they buy.

Sometimes the Church reminds me of the Republican Party. In trying to not offend anyone they attract no one then complain of declining membership.
