'Poster couple' for gay rights in California is divorcing
MSNBC ^ | Irene Moore and Cary Berglund

When gay couples first sought the right to legally wed in California, they argued that they were entitled to all of the benefits of marital bliss.

It was only a matter of time before that benefit extended to the right to split up.

-snip-

Robin Tyler filed for divorce from Diane Olson on Jan. 25. The pair were among 14 same-sex couples who originally challenged the ban in 2008.

In an exclusive interview with NBC4, Tyler spoke about her decision.

"We're human and we went through difficult times," Tyler said. The marriage ran its course, she said.

Tyler and Olson have known each other for 40 years and were together as a couple for 18. They were the poster couple for gay and lesbian rights.

When they wed, in June of 2008, they had gone to the Beverly Hills Courthouse every year for seven years to apply for -- and be denied -- a marriage license.

The ceremony on the steps of the same courthouse was a monumental moment for gay couples everywhere.

"I don't know how to describe it -- I wanted this all my life," Olson told the Jewish Journal that day. "Every time I went to a girlfriend's wedding, and when my brother got married, it was something I always wanted for myself. It looks like God must have wanted it for me, too."

In November 2008 voters passed Prop. 8, banning gay marriage. Tyler and the thousands of other gay and lesbian couples who wed before Nov. 4, 2008, were allowed to remain married but same-sex couples who wanted to get married were forbidden under the new law.

During the prolonged litigation over Prop. 8, Olson marveled at the scope of the ban.

True-—no fault divorce made the contract of marriage worth less than other contracts. (unconstitutional).

Immoral, selfish people can not be selfless-—and moral. Most parents don’t instill moral character into their children which has to be done in the formative years. TV forms their superficial values which will never endure over hardships.

Love is about selflessness and that can’t exist in a “relationship” based on demeaning other’s bodies for one’s own selfish lust. You would never defile—commit sodomy or stick objects in orifices of someone you truly love. It is intrinsically disordered and immature.

The “course” of a real marriage is supposed to run a lifetime.

I still believe the reason behind the push for marriage is a belief that a legal marriage bestows approval, blesings, perhaps even absolution. When that didn’t happen, and the guilt was still there, the need for the marriage vanished.

Yes, it's astonishing, when you think about it, that a person can't prevent a divorce if his spouse wants one ... but he can still be legally responsible for the spouse's credit card debt! (That was a general "he," feel free to substitute "she.")

This couple sounds like many male/female couples in the news: the wedding was what they really wanted, and afterward, being married just bored them, or at least one of them.

Yes-—selfish, me-me people who think nothing of others and children and society as a whole. They destroy all which is civil and decent and thinks the world owes them.

Right-—that void in their soul can never be filled.....even if government puts their “stamp” of approval on their demeaning actions and urges.

They can fool themselves for only so long although many don’t figure it out until too late. What a waste of life and time.

They protested for the right to marry for seven years, and the marriage lasted maybe three...

"Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it."

Seems to me their relationship became consumed and defined by defiance of the civil norm. When they became the norm, it lost its passion, its reason to continue existing.

“At least they had the decency to trim their chin whiskers’’<. Yeah right? I’d hate to think what their under-arms look like. You’d probably find the TV remote in there.

Good grief, you can't go on the roads anymore and now you'll have to stay out of the woods.

You're painting yourself into a corner, just don't insult mountain climbers, LOL.

I love that exhaust smell! It makes me dizzy!

I’m kidding.

Those truck horns have startled me,even though I wasn’t the one being honked at.

There's one clown living down the road who has a train air horn on his big International sugar cane hauler, you'd think a *late freight* is going by and there ain't no tracks for miles and miles, LOL.

I believe there are people who have put those horns on a regular pickup truck.
