As someone who was raised in that area I disagree, the moment you feel like your lost start a fire and I mean a big one, do everything you can to draw attention to yourself. If the lives of my wife and children were at stake I’ll set a mountain on fire, they will find us!

As someone who was raised in the woods and has family still living there - where wildfires are a big worry - the last thing we need is moron city folk starting fires because they get lost for an afternoon, setting themselves on fire - etc.

A well controlled signal fire - NOT in fire season - in extreme danger is one thing. An intent to start a forest fire is something different and can get people killed who were NOT so stupid as to get themselves lost because they are stupid and unprepared.

If someone stupid and unprepared goes DOWNTOWN where they don't belong and finds themselves lost and in danger- starting a fire to alert people to your danger that could cause a lot of damage and kill people is not a good idea.

Similarly.....

If someone stupid and unprepared goes to the FOREST where they don't belong and finds themselves lost and in danger- starting a fire to alert people to your danger that could cause a lot of damage and kill people is not a good idea.

Given they were lost for what, a week, seems they could have simply headed west.

In the south we have an expression that I think fits - "They wuz et up with dumbass"

They did try to eat mushrooms but said they were nasty so they threw them away. Apparently, they weren’t that hungry. :/

have some sense, and sense of direction.

Fail here on both counts. The only two things I know about mushroom picking came from watching the Dead Heads I've known.

1) It's not suited to the low IQ set. It's a culinary version of Russian Roulette. 2) The 'shrooms they are looking for grow in cow pastures, not woodlands.
