GOP voters belie Gingrich’s claim to conservative mantle (Romney winning plurality on right)

Newt Gingrich says he is the conservative choice in the 2012 presidential race, but five states into the campaign, Mitt Romney has won more self-identified conservative voters, according to an analysis by The Washington Times of entrance and exit polls.

Mr. Romney capped off that showing with a win in Nevada that included support from a majority of self-identified conservatives, a feat neither Mr. Gingrich nor the other two remaining candidates have been able to accomplish.

“He may be more conservative than Romney, but that does not mean that he is winning over more conservative voters,” said Mark Rozell, a political science professor at George Mason University

And how many of those Nevada voters were Mormons?

Nevada means nothing as to Romney's broader-based appeal to conservatives.

I don’t see how anyone can look at Romney and call him a Conservative.

I am hard pressed to call him a Republican.

No he isn't... the Republican party is not a right wing party and a plurality of members are progressive... and those are the traitors that back romney.

” included support from a majority of self-identified conservatives”

“self-identified” being the key words. I just don’t trust anyone anymore.

WOW!!! How many articles from various news outlets does this make on the same subject.

Talk about BRAINWASHING in todays news.

Won't work, we are more fired up that usual. 46 more states to go, and Mitt can no longer hide behind mormons, no more free lunch. The real fight has just begun.

Anyone depressed? Brainwashed? well not in FR at least.

The “Mormon” vote in Nevada was quite small in the overal Romney vote!!! The Conservatives in both Florida and Nevada went for Romney because Newt is a severely flawed candidate. I loved Newt and supported him, even though he really ticked me off with his NY-10 liberal love fest, his hugging & cuddling with Nancy Pelosi and Al Sharpton. But....in the end, his vindictive, sour grapes, his poor debate performance, that bizarre press conference, and his blaming everone for his troubles, except himself, tells me this dude in not POTUS material.

I am now supporting Rick Santorum, who IMHO, is the true conservative to match against Mitt Romney. As a matter of fact, I will vote for and support Mitt Romney, Ron Paul or Rick Santorum in the general election. Above all else, Obama & the Democrat Party must be defeated at all costs. Sadly, for many on this site, reality is not in their politcal playbook!!! Newt Gingrich is toast and that fact is just as plain as the nose on your face!!! Newt, IMHO, had a magnificent chance to grab it all, but.....blew the opportunity big time because of his monster ego and lack of grace and humility!!!

Wrong.

Large Mormon Turnout for Nevada Caucuses

Entrance poll results indicate that Mormons account for about a quarter of caucus participants in Nevada today, about the same as their share in 2008 and far more than in previous contests this year - a natural affinity group for Mitt Romney. Evangelical Christians, by contrast, are far less numerous than they were in most previous GOP 2012 events.

I see the GOP-E has you right where they want you, all submissive to their manipulation of the process and their fake GOP candidate Romney.

The GOP-E declared war on the Tea-Party and we have 46 states to go and you have already flown the white flag.

Great job!

Either lead, fight, or get the hell out of the way!

The final tally in Nevada was Romney, 50%, Gingrich 21%, a literal, devastating defeat for Gingrich. That is a loss by 29%. It is possible that this was a fluke, but I doubt it. Only time and upcoming primaries will tell!!! And....Mormons, while they voted heavily for Romney, the majority of Romney votes were Conservatives.

Why? Because, IMHO, many Conservatives stayed home and did not vote, and....those that did, said very clearly, Newt is not the “One”!!!! Energy would be much better metered out to Santorum as the true Conservative option to Mitt Romney!!! MIssouri & Colorado will give us a clearer picture and direction as the process moves along!!!

He was never a Newt supporter.

He used so many typical Santorum drone supporter phrases, that it was obvious.

Ok we get it. You are glad Romney won.

And like the rest of Rick’s flunkies, you root for Mitt in hopes of trying to steer people to Mr. Dead Last.

When that pathetic guy starts to run ads against Mitt then get back to us about how much of a “true conservative” he is.

And....Mormons, while they voted heavily for Romney, the majority of Romney votes were Conservatives.

Mormons were 25 percent of the caucus goers and they went 98 percent for Romney - so they consistituted half his support. If you remove Mormons from the equation, Romney yet again failed to surpass the anti-Mitt vote by a considerable margin.

You are so driven to bash Newt that you are pulling your numbers out of your arse. We'll see what happens when primaries are held in states that represent a better cross-section of the American voting public.

Newt won the conservative votes in SC and Florida. Willard won the liberal votes in those states and the other states. There is no such thing as conservative voters in NH and very few in Iowa and Nevada, safe democratic states in the general election. Willard will not win any Southern states. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Only part of Florida that is Southern is the northern part of the state and Newt won northern Florida big-time.
