The Russian-Orthodox Church canonised one of the founders of the anti-fascist group the "White Rose," Alexander Schmorell, over the weekend in Munich, nearly 70 years after his execution by the Nazis.
Schmorell, who was born in Russia, was celebrated as a new martyr in the church during a special service in the Cathedral of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia in Munich on Saturday. He was 25 at the time of his death.
The White Rose, or Weiße Rose, was founded by a group of Munich students and their philosophy professor Kurt Huber, all of whom actively voiced their resistance against the crimes of the Nazi regime under Adolf Hitler.
In 1942, the group launched a graffiti campaign and began to distribute thousands of leaflets urging opposition to the National Socialist Party.
On July 13, 1943, Schmorell and Huber were executed, just five months after fellow White Rose members Sophie and Hans Scholl and Christoph Probst were put to death.
Archpriest Nikolai Artemoff has been working toward Schmorell's canonisation since 1993, along with Archbishop Mark of Berlin, Germany and Great Britain of the Russian-Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.
"For us, he took a very important stance, rejecting both Bolshevism as well as National Socialism," Artemoff said.
Schmorell's last letter to his family reflected to the depth of his Christian faith. His niece, Alexa Busch, said the church was a "piece of home" for him, much like the Russian language.
"His faith was surely one of the reasons he was so free and independent," she added.

I’m ashamed to say that I never heard of the White Rose until a Freeper posted a movie recomendation a couple of years ago, and turned me on to one of the best foreign movies I have ever saw. A true 5-star movie.
If you haven’t seen Sophie Scholl-The Final Days, you have not seen one of the best movies of all time. It made my top 10 list of most captivating movies of all time, meaning it is one of those movies that stick with you long after you watch it. And makes you want to learn more about the real characters and the White Rose the German Nazi resistance movement, which I never heard of before this movie. Netflix has it.

Sophie Scholl and her “co-conspirators” were executed by guillotine for some odd reason, rather than Hitler’s preferred method — firing squad.
Our priest read during Mass today, the letter from the bishops regarding this administration and their infringing upon our religious rights.
If I recall correctly, to heighten the horror, Sophie was forced to face the guillotine. It is said she showed no sign of fear.

Today, things are not as bad, yet, but we need such commitment. It is time for a New White Rose to form—to distribute the truth—to place messages on the walls, To make a newsletter—that will tell the truth about Obama and the Muslims, the progressive socialists and what they are doing.
