You asked did I also think Romney was petty etc. When he attacked Newt.

Yes, the problem is Newt has not found an effective way to deal with it. My reaction to Newt tonight was not my personal dislike for Newt, it was my belief Newt was making a mistake.

He has developed a mechanism... he had no mechanism, and now he has a mechanism... what other republican talks that way? I love it.

That’s our newtie, he’s a cutie!

Great! I know your donation will help a lot and will be put to good use.

I certainly understand that many can not afford to donate large amounts, but if they were to donate $20 it would help more than they know.

I know folks who frequent Starbucks, get hair done every week, get manicures often and eat out a great deal...but they rarely make donations to their favorite candidates. Just giving up some of those expenditures just once or twice would allow for at least a $25 donation.

He won’t. Too arrogant and self absorbed. Running for Romney’s VP. His has always been a vanity run.

I like to think that I'm a pretty good judge of character.

About the Santorum vs. Perry battle that was going on here last month, I thought that the better guy was Santorum.

I was wrong and it isn't even close.

You post deserves a thumbs up! Too many Americans determine their vote on the superficial such as one’s appearance for the job. Ann Coulter knows that formula very well. It is her gorgeous appearance that has given her great mileage in her career. I know it does soften my displeasure in her when she drifts off into an alternate universe. It brings home the idea that it is our responsibility to look past the appearance and listen to what is said. We must do that because our media is doing less and less of that job—a job that our Constitution has given special consideration for them to do.

I will never forgive the press for the hit job that was done to Newt when ethics charges flew at him when he was Speaker. The same as I will never forgive the press when the same thing was done to Sarah Palin.

You’re right! I’m taking a caffeine-free pledge tonight and giving the $20 per month to Newt! Anybody with me?

This is so little compared to what the the signers of the Declaration of Independence suffered.

I agree 100% Romney was more negative in his ads and Santorum is more snippy in the debates, than Newt.

The prob is Newt is taking it too personally rather than developing an effective response.

I think Romney is beating up on Newt the way W beat up McCain in 2000, and when McCain tried to complain he looked nuts. Newt is looking petty.

Its rope a dope and Romney is getting away with it. IMHO.

Agreed. I think he has let Romney get under his skin. It’s perfectly understandable, but I don’t think it helps.

I think he needs to go after Romney’s economic record. MA was 47 of 50 in jobs and 48 of 50 in private sector jobs when Romney was Governor. Jobs grew at 1% in MA during Romney’s term compared to 5.5% in country overall during that same period. 48 of 50 in GDP growth.

By comparison under the dem Gov Patrick who succeeded Romney MA was in the teens in jobs and in the 20s in GDP growth.

Newt needs to go after Romney with substance and not talk about Soros or Alinsky or blame the media. He needs to point out that for all the talk about Romney being some business whiz his economic record in office is very weak and almost non-existent. MA was one of the worst states in the country economically during his term. Newt needs to get that out there using the data, facts, and figures. It’s all readily available.

Go after him on substance and attack his record where it’s most vulnerable. And contrast the positive economic record during Newt’s time as Speaker.

I really think that’s his best strategy going forward.

Also, Newt’s campaign is one of the few, if not the only one, that will take 5-dollar contributions, because of the cost of processing credit card donations. I have donated 5 bucks many times when that was all I could afford, and it actually adds up...

The talking heads will praise Mitt and Santorum when those two trash Newt. The taking heads will trash Newt when Newt defends himself.

There is no effective way for Newt to react, at least as it will be portrayed by the media.

That leaves Newt with only one option.

Newt responds appropriately and lets the chips fall where they may.

To be fair, I went and checked out some of dear Williams posts and he is fairly evenhanded, and even sometimes above the fray, and maybe a little bit wise even - but not tonight!! He is really grumpy and getting on my nerves!

Thanks for checking. Williams, I apologize for being tough about your attacks on Newt. It's just frustrating that Newt is essentially out there standing alone against the insane onslaught from the GOP-e and MSM. I cut Newt a lot of slack it he doesn't come across as I like. He is hanging tough against unending attacks.

And what I loved about the press conference, Newt was talking over the heads of the media, right out into the heartland and the hearts of his supporters... It was a very nice strategery...

I didn't get to the presser. From what you said, it sounds like he is smartly trying to go around the press. I pray more and more Americans see and hear Newt.

That’s absurd, considering Santorum’s vote doesn’t all go to Newt if he drops out - it splits, whereas all of Newt’s vote pretty much would go to Santorum.

In any even, so far Romney has defeated them in the primaries where he has won by more than both of their vote totals combined, so even if 100% of Santorum’s vote would have gone to Newt (which it would not have, not anywhere close), calling him “Rick Perot” is absurd.
