If he did that NOW, many will see that as sour grapes [shades of Pat Buchannan] and would not support him at all. He would be lucky to get 10% of the vote.

That's an interesting take on things. Third parties always seem quixotic and hopeless, but given the shambles the GOP is in, and the near certainty of defeat, this might be an opportune moment to advance a third party alternative. Something robust enough to become the second party while the GOP withers away. Because it's starting to look like that alternative in its infancy has a better chance of survival than the decrepit GOP.
