While Mitt Romney is taking a hard line on immigration even as the Republican primaries head toward the heavily Hispanic states of Nevada, Colorado and Arizona, the Mormon Church to which he belongs has become a decisive player in promoting policies that are decidedly more friendly toward immigrants.
The church was instrumental last year in passing controversial legislation in Utah that would provide guest worker permits to allow illegal immigrants with jobs to remain in the United States. The church also threw its weight behind the Utah Compact, a declaration calling for humane treatment of immigrants and condemning deportation policies that separate families, which has been adopted by several other states.

Mormons in Utah who back an accommodating approach to immigrants say they have been disturbed to see Mr. Romney align himself with his partys anti-immigration flank and with Tea Party members. Mr. Romney has dismissed as amnesty any proposal to create a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. He at first said he would veto the Dream Act, which would offer legal status to young illegal immigrants in the United States if they earned a college degree or serve in the military. He later revised his position to say he favored legal status for those who serve in the military.

Why is Bishop Willard Mitt Romney not using his title? What is he trying to hide? Do we want the elder of any faith to serve as President? Would we want a Catholic, Anglican, Methodist Bishop serving as president? Is it even constitutional? We need to have this conversation now!
This means nothing. The Catholics are all mushy on illegal immigrants too.
Tough? Really? I must have missed all those buses filled with illegals leaving Massachusetts.
Because while someone in the LDS church will be called "bishop" forever once they have been one, once they are released from that position, they are no longer serving as a bishop. Since he also served as a stake president, I would suspect that most people in that area call him President Romney, and not Bishop Romney.
Is it even constitutional?
sigh
I don’t expect the Mormons are afraid that Mitt will go against the teachings of his church as President.
Mitt Romney is lying about his illegal alien view. Pure, straight up lying.
MEDIA: " Got it. Anything else you want put in the story? "
MITT: (vacant look) "That is all that I've been instructed to tell you."

Now I wonder just when he did this 180 on what he was saying during the AMNESTY Bill years ???
Hmmm ???
Why is anyone concerned about what Mitt Romney says? Haven’t they been paying attention? Give him a few days and a little pushing back and he’ll change his mind.
editing my tagline
The Catholic Bishops are trying to fill their pews with Mexicans. I don’t know why the Mormons support them.
But the fact is that Romney will swing whichever the wind blows until the election, and probably then too.
Ping
I didn’t even know he had a tough immigration policy stance.
Mormons are taught to lie their goal is power by any means necessary
