“...abandoning the note could save around $5.5 billion over the next 30 years.”

Ah-huh. Minus the cost of refitting all existing vending machines to take the new coin, for starters.

Besides...if there are no more $1 bills, how are we going to show our appreciation to pole dancers?

A dollar coin made out of a silve copper alloy with a gram of silver in it per coin would be accepted overnight

Regardless of how unpopular people think it will be, fiscally, it just makes sense. A coin has about a 30 year, or potentially longer, life span, where a “rag” dollar's is an average of 18 months. A poster above is also correct that we should abandon the cent and nickel, since it costs more to make both of them than their worth (Seigniorage). Both of these ideas would save billions of dollars.

Imagine the weight and the fuel to transport this currency. Not to mention the cost to re-fit machines.

Lived in the UK and HATED the pound coin. (Sorry Brit FReepers). Too heavy, imho.

What about the pocket weight of carrying around 10 or 20 dollars in one dollar bills as opposed to 10 or 20 $1 COINS?

Well, that should just about cover the cost of the Secret Service taking care of the Obama Family for the next thirty years.

Ditch the Penny
Round all transactions to nearest 5cent

Or better
Ditch the Nickel too.

Both are wastes of pocket space

The $20 bill is now the new $1 bill anyway, so what does it matter?

I watch $1 bills blow by me every day and it never even occurs to me to try to retrieve them.

A dollar is now worth about the same as a nickel was when we started printing them. It’s a good idea.

Before we switch to dollar coins (which is actually a good idea), let’s abolish pennies (and maybe nickels and dimes: when we abolished the half-cent coin its purchasing power was comparable to a dime today). Australia and New Zealand did if: one just has a “rounding” entry in every transaction to push it to the nearest 5 cents, just like having one of those “take a penny, leave a penny” bins, but with everyone obliged to participate and some pennies always in stock.

Once we’re no longer carrying annoying little coins that are scarcely worth anything, dollar coins will seem much more congenial.

McCain wants this because Arizona is a major copper producing state.

Don’t know why Harkin wants it....McCain probably told him, “Vote for the dollar coin and I’ll vote to increase ethanol subsidies for Iowa.”

I bet this has something to do with it. And they keep producing them because no one has told them to stop!

I’m all for this. While they are at it, and freeing up a cash register slot, how about bringing out some $500 bills? They can dump the penny and nickel too.
