Reuters) - Alabama's crackdown on illegal immigrants, widely seen as the toughest in the United States, could cost the state's economy up to $10.8 billion, according to a new study.

The Alabama law, passed in June, requires police to detain people they suspect of being in the U.S. illegally if they cannot produce proper documentation when stopped for any reason, among other measures.

The cost-benefit analysis by University of Alabama economist Samuel Addy estimated up to 80,000 jobs could be vacated by illegal immigrants fleeing the crackdown, costing Alabama's economy up to $10.8 billion.

The lost jobs would cost Alabama up to $264.5 million in lost state sales and income taxes, and as much as $93.1 million in lost city and county sales taxes, it found.

At the low end of the range, Addy found the crackdown could cost Alabama's economy $2.3 billion.

After they get rid of them, it will save them billions.

But in any event, it’s the fault of the federal government.

The flow of kickbacks to Democrats to keep Illegals from being prosecuted should be deducted from that number, as should be the U.S. Citizens who will replace them and
ADD to the Legal economy.

I live in AL and so far we have not seen any ill effects of the crackdown. However, our unemployment rate has dropped dramatically, saving the state lots of money. The restaurants have had to adjust, but have managed to replace the missing staff. We have also had a rash of US citizens “marrying” foreigners, especially Eastern Europeans, only to be caught in fraudulent arrangements by the INS. Some folks have ended up in jail or with fines.

There is one way to solve the problem. Clean up the welfare roles and put them to work. No reason for business to suffer. Of course I suppose the democrats would lose votes, but the state would save a lot. There should be no guest workers just because some are too lazy to work and feel they have the right enslave their neighbors.

Repeat after me. There are no costs or expenses for illegal immigration. There are only benefits from illegal immigration. Without illegal immigration the economy would collapse. If you don’t believe me look at California. /s

I heard some of this yesterday from some liberal talking head on NPR. I wondered then if the study looked at the savings the state could expect in food stamps, housing, medical care, schooling etc, etc. It really sounded like hogwash to me so I looked up the Alabama unemployment rate and found this article in the Birmingham News.

Alabama's December unemployment rate decline best in U.S.

This is absurd. The JOBS won’t go away; the employers will just have to hire legal workers, ya know, like US citizens?

What makes him think that the illegal workers are *paying* income taxes, anyway?

Why do Democrats demand “living wages” and then turn around and argue that illegals help the economy by working for low wages?

“The lost jobs would cost Alabama up to $264.5 million in lost state sales and income taxes, and as much as $93.1 million in lost city and county sales taxes, it found. “

10.8 billion? sounds like a figure pulled out of someone’s a**.

Versus how much Alabama taxpayer money spent on all the government goodies for the illegals?

To have to rely on what amounts to illegal Mexican “coolies” for our economy to survive is utterly ridiculous.

Say how many illegals are thought to left AL ? They make up for any lost sales taxes with a few Bama football games.

The bias in this article is clear from the headline and the lead.

The headline says “costing”, but the lead paragraph says “could cost”. This is pathetic. If I was the editor, I’d fire the headline writer for not reading the copy correctly. I’d fire the writer even faster if he/she wrote the headline.

There are no facts here. There is only conjecture from a academic who has suspect motives. To call this news is stretching the point beyond recognition, but since that’s what Libs do, I am not surprised.

I would be even less surprised if the economic benefits end up outweighing the costs. Less crime, less drain on public resources, an influx of citizens and legal residents looking for work... Hell, they’ll probably save a few million a year just on graffiti removal.

And that was the exact same $10.8 billion that Alabama was going to contribute to the effort to save the polar bears that were adrift on that iceberg.

80,000 more jobs filled by Americans, and 80,000 fewer on welfare/unemployment is a GOOD THING Rooters.
