If former House Speaker Newt Gingrich continues in the Republican primaries, not only is he doing more good than harm, he may be the only candidate left who can save the Republican Party.
The Republican establishment is bound and determined that it is going to impose a Mitt Romney on us. Conservatives do not want former Gov. Mitt Romney.
You see, we have danced this dance before. We had Sen. John McCain shoved down our throats in 2008. How did that work out for us? We have George W. Bush, who barely won his races, and before that we had former Sen. Bob Dole, who blew it, and George H.W. Bush, who could not win re-election against an unknown governor from Arkansas!
We conservatives have had it.
The conservative and Tea Party bloc of the Republican Party supports Newt Gingrich.
We conservatives held our noses and voted for John McCain in 2008. That did it for us. We are not doing it in 2012. The Tea Party overwhelmingly supports Gingrich over Romney. One exit poll showed Gingrich getting 45 percent of the Tea Party vote versus 14 percent for Romney.
Gingrich is the only one in the race who has a chance of uniting the Republican Party. If Romney wins the nomination, a quarter and a half of the Tea Party voters say they will not vote him in the general election. That is a ticket to defeat.
By staying in the race, Newt holds out the possibility of saving the Republican Party...

I have a delicious little fantasy about that.
It involves Ron Paul pulling the Tea Party out of the Republican Party and merging it with the Libertarian Party, Constitution Party -- and those members of the Occupy movement that are not Trotskyites and anarchists, and who have been educated that the government cannot solve their problems. He goes back to early American history and dusts off the name of the Federalist Party -- except that this Federalist Party is truly about federalism, not centralism.
Then he announces that he is too old to do this anymore and pulls Sarah Palin onto the stage as the nominee of the new party.
Hey, it's my fantasy! Go get your own fantasy!
“...Any political organization that tosses 40-60 percent of its constituents aside is asking for division. Furthermore, it is the more conservative group that leaves the more liberal bunch almost every time. Economic disaster is usually a hugely effective catalyst for change.
I fearlessly predict the Pubs are finished this time around if they ignore the conservatives. Sort of like the Whig Party in the U.S. and the Liberal Party in the U.K....”

What is really sad is that this tail wagging the dog situation is entirely avoidable. We are a conservative party with a conservative platform.
Two years ago I wrote a post here at FR titled “Coming Sequel to the Romulan-GOP Schism & The irony of Romney celebrating Scott Brown’s election”.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2452795/posts
“We are trying to avoid dealing with a major problem and if we do not confront that problem NOW, we will have another disaster like we did in the last presidential election and like the one we had in 1996. IF the Republican Party wants to avoid another schism, we MUST require a run-off election in the presidential primaries when ANY presidential candidate wins without a majority of the partys votes.
It basically panned out as we knew it would...”
The thing that didn’t hold true is the list of conservative candidates. But the thesis of our party splitting our conservative votes over multiple candidates, thereby being in danger of electing the ONE liberal in the race turned out as predicted.
Some cynics pointed out that the elections are state by state and obviously held on different dates thereby making a run-off implausible...
That doesn’t matter. Each state could be required to hold their elections as they always do and if no candidate got a majority - then they should be required to have a run-off between the top two candidates by vote.
In such a scenario we would not have had Dole, McCain and Romney would certainly lose as well.
The Party elites ignore such calls because they betray our platform and would lose their corrupt little racket. We should have DEMANDED it.
I’m no lawyer and do not know the minute details of how to promulgate a run-off requirement but I am confident that a private political party can make it a requisite if it so desires.
It is preposterous that every election the nominee should end up being the candidate who is most despised by the majority - absolutely offensive to any sensible human being.
In one episode of the 70s era television sitcom, “Taxi,” the cabbies complained that the apples in the garage vending machine were bad. Alex Rieger suggested they buy the rotten apples so they would get fresh apples.
Over time, they kept buying the bad apples but never got good apples. A driver finally caught the man who stocked the vending machine and asked why they were still getting rotten apples.
The man replied that since they keep accepting rotten apples the vender would keep providing them.
That pretty sums up our relationship with the GOP.
I liked your post (#13). Good explanation and summation of what might be store for us.
I hear you. Easy to get depressed. Also easy to get mad! I prefer mad!
Hope to see you more often!!!
Guaranteed.
As will I. I am certainly not going to leave it blank to have someone decide my "intent".
Yes indeed!
“Im no big fan of the Mittster. But next November when the choice is between Mitt and the Zero who will they be voting for.”
The only difference is their underwear.
“The only difference is their underwear.”
You hurt my eyes/brain with that!
Are you claiming Mitt is Gay? :^}
I don’t have much of a fix on how Santorum sits with Gingrich or vice versa. Will Santorum’s likely switch to Gingrich, with or without Rick’s urging?
I too am sick of RINOs shoving it down our throats. Hopefully us Texans will rise up on April 3 and give Newt a resounding victory to start the comeback just like we did for Reagan in 1976. If Romo does become the nominee, I will still fight hard for conservatives down ticket, but MAY NOT pull the presidential lever as a protest. We have to keep the House and take the Senate so we can tie-up Obo or Romos liberal agendas. Sometimes defense is the best you can do until you gather enough strength to go on offense!
Great post and you are very polite. I felt like something a little stronger than a rube. Never again.

Only a total idiot would propose a Moon Base!
Unless . . .
Newt Gingrich were to make it a tax free colony of the U.S.A.
Such a colony couldn’t be stopped from growing.
LOL! Love it! I’m there!!
Barking from the moon!! Woo hoo!!
Our local loosertaian neal boortz just went off his nut this morning telling conservatives to get onboard the romney campaign.PHUCK HIM! And I cant say that enough.I dont vote for liberals of either party and most of the people I know wont either.I will stand with NEWT.
If a candidate loses... it is that candidate's fault and the fault of the political machine that promoted him. We can only support a Conservative candidate... THAT conservative candidate has to go out and win the vote... and they are ultimately responsible for their own loss. If I didn't make myself clear... just peruse my tag line.
