Earlier today, I said that only Mitt Romney could derail Mitt Romney this month. Did my prediction come true already? The media and Romney detractors have jumped all over this statement to CNN in which Romney says that he is not concerned about the very poor, but that slice of Romneys statement is entirely misleading although its certainly not adept for a front-runner:

Congrats to President 0bama on his re-election.
I can just see the end of all the Bain Capital commercials interviewing all the people who Romney fired now ending with:
“I’m not concerned about the very poor.”
All Romney trolls should leave FR. Romney is pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-govt healthcare, pro-gay marriage.. Unbelievable.
I have supported every conservative including Newt. If Romney gets the nom I will oppose Obama which is my main motivation to begin with. It’s a shame to see too much hatred unleashed in the GOP primary but that’s life.
I have no prob supporting Newt even though he has some liberal flaws as well. Both Newt and Mitt espouse pure conservatism now but there is only one 100% true sincere never wavering conservative still in this race, and that is Santorum.
As bad as things currently are, I vividly recall the similar stage of Jimmy Carter’s administration as being much worse. It may take a second Obama administration to descend to similar depths and beyond in order to elect someone along the lines of Reagan. A primary battle between Sarah Palin and Jeb Bush might have a very different outcome in 2016 than what is playing out right now.
I don’t even see how a conservative can defend Romney’s statement. To me it sounds like he is just fine with the poor being dependent on the state (taxpayer funded safety net). Romney is liberal statist. No doubt about it.
Newt, otoh, wants everyone to have a job and be self-sufficient.
“I dont even see how a conservative can defend Romneys statement. To me it sounds like he is just fine with the poor being dependent on the state (taxpayer funded safety net). Romney is liberal statist. No doubt about it.”
That is an absolutely brilliant observation. You’re right. Myth supports the continuation of the welfare state as is. He does not see that massive gov’t depedency is part of the problem.
Romney probably meant to say, “worry about the poor.” Still, this comment is indefensible.
All Christian’s should be concerned about the poor, even the worst abusers of the welfare system, since we care about the physical and spiritual well-being of all people.
Paradoxically, it is out of concern for the well-being of the poor that we may cut some of the poor off of assistance programs —he who will not work should not eat. But we do this out of concern for the souls of the poor.
I can’t imagine uttering the words, “I don’t care about the poor.” That comment came from the heart.
Not sure if this is where he was going,
but I, for one, am FED UP with the left trotting out all these victims, the “hungry”, etc.
There is NO EXCUSE for anyone to go hungry in our society because there are so many ways for them to live off the taxpayer teat. We should simply DISMISS any leftist argument that uses “the poor” as a reason to implement even more socialist programs.
Next summer they will burn the country to the ground in Myth's name.
So let me get this straight. We just spent the last two weeks trashing Romney for being a capitalist and now we’re going to trash him for being insufficiently concerned about the poor?
Remember, they’ve told us it’s what ‘zany’ Newt might say that we had to worry about!
