Mitt Romney, once seen as a sure bet to win the Michigan Republican presidential primary, now appears locked in a surprisingly tight race with challenger Newt Gingrich.
Michigan is home turf for the former Massachusetts governor. His late father, George Romney, was a popular governor of Michigan from 1963 to 1969, and the younger Romney grew up in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills.
But with the states primary approaching on Feb. 28, Mr. Romneys lead remains small, given his home-court advantage. A poll released last week by the Detroit Free Press/WXYZ-TV found that 31% of likely voters supported Mr. Romney, compared with 26% supporting former House Speaker Gingrich.
The poll had a 4-point margin of error and was conducted Jan. 21-25. It also found Michigan voters would pick President Barack Obama over Mr. Romney if the governor becomes the Republican nominee, with 48% of likely voters going for Mr. Obama and 40% going for Mr. Romney.

But how can this be? Didn’t Dick Morris say Romney was likely to win Michigan, seeing as how his father was governor there, like a million years ago. You know, because most voters in Michigan NOW remember or care about George Romney. I never understand this line of thinking.
They have been running anti-Romney radio ads the last few weeks that he has been a horrabley ruthless businessman which even people right of center can be a deathkiss in Michigan. And audio of his pro-choice tendencies
I can see that being affective
Ditto the Tea Parties here are not dead, some are just hybernating and made things happen in 2010. One man is credited for stopping the Gov's desire for another bridge. That gent is from the Willow Run Tea Party Caucus.
Please note, Newt is on an American Energy Independence tear.
My guess when he gets to Michigan he will be very pro drilling for the "Antrim Shale" Gas here in Michigan.
So Romney’s lead is 5% and falling in his home state, and we’re told he has a 12% lead in Florida? Something isn’t right.
Didn’t a certain candidate lose his home state of TN not too terribly long ago? I say MI isn’t a sure bet for The Flipper so who’s to say cuz he sure ain’t like The Gipper! LOL
Most of us wouldn’t know him from a hole in Lake Michigan.
The problem are the old-timers.
Michigan’s older population is fiercely loyal to a lot of these old names. Doesn’t mater if it’s Romney, Arthur Vandenburg, or Gerald Ford. Some of these people WILL vote for him for sure based on his dad.
Thankfully not enough to make a huge difference.
Looking for a convincing win, a confident Mitt Romney said Monday the Florida primary is breaking his way and urged voters to send Newt Gingrich “to the moon.” Gingrich claimed he’s gaining ground and will stay in the race until summer.
“You can sense that it’s going our way,” Romney told reporters. The former Massachusetts governor was already looking ahead, making plans to stop in Minnesota on his way to Nevada on Wednesday, the day after Florida votes.
A day before the voting, Romney ridiculed Gingrich, his chief rival here: “Send him to the moon,” Romney said at a rally early Monday, poking fun at Gingrich’s claim to build a moon colony as president. Romney also scoffed at “the idea of the moon as the 51st state” as “not one that’s come to my mind.”
Gingrich threatened a long slog. “I think he’s going to find this a long campaign,” Gingrich said.
“That’s why they’re trying to carpet-bomb us here in Florida,” said former Gingrich aide Rick Tyler, who runs the pro-Gingrich political action committee Winning Our Future. “They’re trying to end this thing. But it’s not going to end.”
Will be interesting to see if the Dems vote for RuPaul?
Did I say the Romney ads were scathing??? Yep, they are.
And I pray they are working.
West Michigan didn't like Mitt in 08. SE Michigan tolerated him because of the strong dislike of McCain. Many of the Mitt voters in 08 aren't fans of him now. The more they know of him, the more they do not like him. The only thing in Mitt's favor is that Gingrich isn't all that liked here either for the same reasons. Flip flops and untrustworthy.
I do not like this field one bit. I'll probably go Santorum if he's still in the race. I have trouble getting past Newt on global warming and his cheating, especially dealing with cancer in my family. No to Romney.
"I like to be able to fire people."
As a businessman myself, while I don't have employees currently, firing people is not something I like to do at all. It means I either made a bad hire or can't afford somebody.
Anyone under 44 never lived to see George Romney as governor. Anyone under 67 never voted for George. Even my parents in their 60's were too young to vote for George Romney, although they remember George (more just who he is) without real strong opinions one way or the other. It doesn't affect their views of Mitt. There's no real loyalty there, although I think they were JFK democrats at that time before Roe v Wade.
No foolin'! Why not have the genuine article?
I shook George’s hand when he came to our little Christian school when I was about in 6th grade. I thought he must be a Christian cause he spoke at our school. I had never heard of Mormons then. In those days, my parents liked all Republicans.
Romney will win in Michigan simply because the party royalty is genetically pre disposed to stand by him. They are slowly going the way of the dinosaurs but its a few years off yet.
Cain was the only one who stood a chance against Romney here.
Personally I intend to vote for Santorum.
The unions are running ads against Mitt. They detest him. I am no union fan but if they help Newt..I say go for it.
So Romneys lead is 5% and falling in his home state, and were told he has a 12% lead in Florida? Something isnt right.
.................................................
I know what you mean but FLA is an outlier in a sense whatever happens because it is a bunch of fat old people who just vote the way cnn tells them. Romney is good at snowing seniors.
Wasn’t it Gov. Romney who ordered the Michigan National Guard into Detroit during the ‘67 riots? Maybe that’s what we’re supposed to remember.
