Morgen and John at Verum Serum dug up this nugget, and not from 15 years ago when the Heritage Foundation had its brief and ill-advised fling with individual health-insurance mandates at the federal level. This comes from a May 2009 conference call hosted by Newt Gingrich on the subject of health-care reform as ObamaCare had just begun its tortured path through Congress. In this clip, Gingrich specifically calls for individual must carry mandates, and even notes that the insurance companies agreed that such a law would make must issue a better deal for them.
Proof?
One candidate “talked” about it - the other candidate actually “implemented” it!
CASE CLOSED!!!
The point is that Santorum opposed federally mandated health care. Santorum opposed the bailouts, Santorum opposed Cap & Trade and pointed to Global Warming as bad science. Newt AND Romney both signed off on these issues as supporters in one way or another.
But, Santorum will not defeat obama...THAT, my friend, is the MAIN point.
And yet, the third candidate has a long history of speaking out against it. So, by your logic — on this issue alone — Santorum is the better candidate.
My wife and I decided last week, after Newt’s class warfare attack on Romney, that we made a HUGE mistake when we donated to his campaign. We made amends by sending Santorum a donation. We simply cannot, and will not, support Newt until a long list of questions are answered to our satisfaction.
I beg to differ. Newt will be destroyed by the Obama machine. His lackeys in the press will happily tear Newt apart on character, ego, and erratic behavior. Think about how those voting in Iowa were swayed by Mitt’s negative ads. Multiply that by 100 and that is how a general election against Newt would go. Women cannot stand Newt. By losing them wholesale to Obama, we hand the election to him. Obama can try and paint Santorum as extreme, however that is the best they have against him. That means that issues and Obama’s record would have to be discussed. On issues, we win and on Obama’s record we win. Newt is unelectable in the general election. We need women voters in order to win. Newt cannot bring enough of them.
Santorum did not oppose the bailouts.
He did, however, oppose Right-To-Work, which is proving to be a foremost issue of our times.
Plus, he’s never met an entitlement expansion vote or new entitlement vote he didn’t like.
Santorum is finished. I like his positions, but his candidacy is over. Santorum will never be able to get a plurality of the voters in any state as long as Newt and Romney are in it. It’s a numbers game. It’s over for him.
At this point a vote for Santorum is equivalent to a vote for Romney. IBTZ
Romney and Gingrich... Good Lord, in a nation of some 310 million people, why can`t we do better than these two clowns to go up against Obama???
I bet the odds of a third-party presence on November`s ballot are better than 50%.
I’m not claiming he’s perfect, but I am saying he is better than Newt or Romney.
By your logic, a vote for Newt is a vote for Obama.
Your attitude is why obama will be re-elected...enjoy socialism.
and
Yet Santorum, who supported Prescription Medicare add on btw, can’t win.
He can’t defeat Mittens and is not even on the Ohio ballot.
Santorum is a dead-ender who will will end up giving us another GOP E Moderate.
We all lose but Santorum’s career is axed forever.
In my opinion Santorum is a much stronger candidate. I don’t see how that helps Obama get re-elected. I want the strongest person against Obama. No matter who the nominee is on our ticket, I will hold my nose if need be and vote for them. This notion that somehow I need to fall in line at this early stage is ridiculous. The ones who will get Obama reelected are those who say they will never vote for anyone but their guy. That is just foolish.
