Oakland, Occupy take stock of clash's damage

Oakland officials and Occupy protesters Sunday confronted the fallout from their continuing conflict, a fight that reignited Saturday with a chaotic, often violent day of demonstrations that resulted in at least 400 arrests.

A day after Saturday's clashes, city officials took stock of the damage, which included injuries to three police officers and several protesters, as well as vandalism inside City Hall.

There, dozens of protesters had broken in with a crowbar, grabbed California and U.S. flags, and ignited them on the front steps.

"It's like a tantrum," Mayor Jean Quan said while displaying the damage inside the building, which included a broken wooden model of City Hall she estimated to be 100 years old. "They're treating us like a playground."

Quan said Occupy Oakland had "refused to be nonviolent," and as a result was "turning off the rest of the movement." She said police would step up efforts to obtain restraining orders against some protesters, keeping them from approaching City Hall.

Police Chief Howard Jordan, at an afternoon news conference, said 14 outside police agencies had provided mutual aid to Oakland. He did not have an exact number of arrests.

Outside City Hall Sunday, some activists gathered in Frank Ogawa Plaza condemned police officers who responded aggressively to stop Occupy Oakland from seizing the vacant Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center and turning it into a headquarters for the movement.

They accused officers of using batons, beanbag bullets and tear gas without justification.

"Whatever qualms people have with Occupy Oakland, it's the police who have committed the most egregious violence," said Scott Johnson, a 34-year-old Oakland resident. "They instigated the violence by not allowing us to take over an unused building."

Still, the disorganized nature of Saturday's demonstration, and the hours-long street skirmishes... left some protesters with mixed feelings.

"It's like a tantrum," Mayor Jean Quan said

Yeah, you leftist hag. Keep trying to minimize their violence as childish behavior. I'm sure that will work with your constituency. /wish this was sarc

IOW - "Let us do what we want and there won't be any trouble".

You gotta wonder if these people actually know what they're saying...

Oakland and it’s government is every bit as socialist/communist as are those of San Francisco or Berkeley. That “useful idiot” of a Mayor invited this problem into the city. I don’t feel sorry for Oakland residents, inasmuch as, they voted-in the government that they have. They’ve bankrupted themselves. The only people I feel sorry for are the Cops who have to deal with these miscreants (called Occupy Oakland); since they’re operating under an onerous consent decree administered by an extreme left-wing federal judge. So, if they should happen to kick one of these shit-birds in the ass they risk losing their jobs.

You let a bunch of filthy, liberal animals run wild in your city, and then you act surprised when they act like filthy, liberal animals??

I'd say you got what you deserved!

From the article, quoting one of the indigenous “Persons”:
“They instigated the violence by not allowing us to take over an unused building.”

“All your unused buildings are belong to us”.

It’s just a tantrum. Perhaps Mayor Quan should take them out for a Happy Meal and some time at a McDonald’s Playground?

This NYT “must visit” has to be some kind of test of a new computer system that went wrong. Oakland is listed fifth IN THE WORLD of places to visit. A few unfortunate passages from the three-week-old article indicate in hindsight either some kind of payola or a pathological inability to recognize an “outlier” data point:

“Tensions have cooled since violence erupted at the recent Occupy Oakland protests...”

“sophisticated restaurants are now being joined by upscale cocktail bars, turning once-gritty Oakland into an increasingly appealing place to be after dark...”

Quan, the rest of the government types and the people of Oakland deserve every bit of the violence and vandalism that descends on them.

They thought they could get in bed with the Devil and they would get free stuff.

Now they get to find out what he is doing to them and he ain't lettin' 'em outta that bed.

Pardon me while I make some popcorn.

"They're treating us like a playground."...most telling image out of the confrontation was a big sign painted somewhere which said only "Revenge" - which is exactly what the whole Occupy scam is about - talentless, lazy and irresponsible people trying to get even with those capable and sccomplished types who make them face up to what they are - talentless, lazy, and irresponsible.....
