Romney avoids mentioning it, but [Joseph] Smith ran for president in 1844 as an independent commander in chief of an army of God advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government in favor of a Mormon-ruled theocracy. Challenging Democrat James Polk and Whig Henry Clay, Smith prophesied that if the U.S. Congress did not accede to his demands that they shall be broken up as a government and God shall damn them. Smith viewed capturing the presidency as part of the mission of the church. He had predicted the emergence of the one Mighty and Strong a leader who would set in order the house of God and became the first of many prominent Mormon men to claim the mantle.
Smiths insertion of religion into politics and his call for a theodemocracy where God and people hold the power to conduct the affairs of men in righteous matters created a sensation and drew hostility from the outside world. But his candidacy was cut short when he was shot to death by an anti-Mormon vigilante mob. Out of Smiths national political ambitions grew what would become known in Mormon circles as the White Horse Prophecy a belief ingrained in Mormon culture and passed down through generations by church leaders that the day would come when the U.S. Constitution would hang like a thread as fine as a silk fiber and the Mormon priesthood would save it.
Romney is the product of this culture. At BYU, he was idolized by fellow students and referred to, only half jokingly, as the One Mighty and Strong. He was the alpha male in the rarefied Cougar pack, according to Michael D. Moody, a BYU classmate and fellow member of the group...

“As far back as 1837, Joseph Smith was writing about Area 51...” Ooops, sorry, I misread that!
If the average person knew the theories of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, condensed into what we now know as Mormonism, they wouldn’t know whether to laugh or to scream.
Agreed. We will be treated over this election cycle with numerous articles regarding Mormonism’s bizarre theology, traditions and history.
Missionary Mitt has demonstrated that LYING is a perfectly acceptable.... means and methods to WIN. Wonder if he used that same technique in building his capital gains? Obama's performance art crowd 'occupy' are going to thump his 1% 'rich' gourd.
Did’jua get that part about the US government and US Constitution being overthrown and controlled by lds?
The prophecy is about the US not a state.
Unless I’m mistaken, Mitt Romney didn’t attempt to force the Massachusetts to become Mormons. This thread is interesting as history, but it’s absurd to say it’s anything other than history. There are many valid reasons to oppose Romney without bringing up the church he attends.
It would be much easier for Romney to rename our planet, Kolob ......and require us to refer to him as “god Romney”.
Note: Smith had a gun. He was shooting back. We are not talking Lives of the Saints and holy martyrdom here.
If a Catholic Cardinal were running for President, do you think his church and his relationship to it would be fair game?
Smith burned down news papers because they said unflattering things about him.
Romney destroys people in commercials and innuendo when they say unflattering things about him. (especially if they are black or Catholic or women)
Cut from the same jib that Smith and Romney.
And can you imagine what he will do if and when he is the president?
Be just like BHO.
The Catholic Church doesn’t allow its clergy to hold public office, so that’s not something I’ve given any thought to. In any event, the Mormons don’t have the large professional clergy that the Catholic Church does. With few exceptions, it has a layman’s ministry which operates on a volunteer basis. A Mormom with the title of bishop is usually not a long-term position and it is not a paid position. It’s an apples and oranges anaolgy.
None of this means I support Mitt Romney. He is my least favorite Republican candidate. I don’t fault you for opposing him at all. Still, there is a wealth of material you can post without resorting to attacks on his faith. As I mentioned in my last post, did Romney attempt to force his religion on Massachusetts when he was Governor there?
Boggles the mind.
The better question would be, did Romney enrich or empower the Mormon Church in any way as governor? And would he as president?
As a former missionary and a powerful leader in the Mormon Church, I'm am sure this is in his thoughts.
The Mormon people who I know hold Romney as Divine!
I say that a man is the product of his personal belief system. If you want to know Miatt Romney, study the LDS Church, because the church owns it’s members! As a Bishop of the secret society known as the LDS Church, Mitt Romney considers himself divine as well! Just as Barack Obama holds himself above our laws! Brothers by different mothers! Mitt Romney is the Mormon’s White Horse!
The only thing missing is the part about Jihad.
As much as I do not like Romney, I dislike even more this ominous sounding left wing hit piece. Articles like this are just the beginning and we would be well advised not to click through to websites that offer one or another ding on our candidates. These are meant to demoralize us.
We may end up with Romney and if we do, I, for one, will pull the lever on his (our) behalf. I still prefer someone else, but I’ll take anyone over that fool in the White House.
All should read what is in that website. It exposes the LDS myths. Go and read, then come back and tell us that a mormon president would not matter.
Blue your point would be brilliant if the information were not true. Hit pieces are “facts” that have been distorted, or selected, there is nothing in this story which is not true.
mormons teach the “white horse prophecy”, they believe the “white horse prophecy” and they believe Romney is the guy.
All of my large lds family are supporting Romney lock stock and barrel because he is lds AND one aunt said Romney will be the fulfillment of the prophecy, she actually refers to him as Moses.
