Newt’s speech, and the polls that show things tightening, have really inspired me. If I can spare the time over the next few days, I’m going to work the phone banks to push Newt over the finish line.

I have never volunteered to do that for any candidate, and I’ve worked in politics before.

Me too. I always work Presidential elections (although I had to hold my nose to work for McCain, and I simply wouldn't work for Romney) but never primaries. However, I just emailed the Newt 2012 office nearest me to volunteer to make phone calls. It's not bad, you just call people to ask if they have voted, who they're going to vote for, if you can convince them to vote for the candidate, etc.

IIRC, it may be permissible to offer them help getting to the polls. But I could be wrong on that one. I was living in a more rural area a few campaigns back and maybe you can't do that now. But in any case, the campaign office will know the rules.
