Gingrich: I'll go all the way to the convention
Fox News ^ | January 28, 2012 | Joy Lin

Port St. Lucie, Fla. -- Whether or not he wins Florida, Newt Gingrich says, "I will go all the way to the convention. I expect to win the nomination."

Mitt Romney's surrogates have been appearing at every one of Newt Gingrich's rallies in the Sunshine State, but the tactic hasn't seemed to draw much reaction from the former House speaker, who on Saturday turned most of his attention to President Obama on the stump. He focused on three things "that matter to Florida ... jobs, housing, and space."

(snip)

"People ask me what can we do about getting more jobs in America? And the answer is: defeat Barack Obama!" Gingrich began. "People say what can we do about housing foreclosure problem in Florida? The answer is defeat Barack Obama! People ask about the price of gasoline and the answer is: defeat Barack Obama!"

Since I seem to always being down about Newt, I’ll say that I really liked his sentiment in the last paragraph. That’s what I want to hear from now until the election.

Clearly wrong headed. If Santorum dropped out Newt would walk away with it.

Santorum can’t win and all he’s doing now is drawing votes from Newt and I have a feeling IT’S ON PURPOSE!

If the front-runner proves to have a solid ceiling that is too low to beat Romney, what do YOU suggest?

It could well be that Gingrich cannot get the support of more than 40% of the electorate. If those 40% are all willing to support ANYBODY to beat Romney, while the Santorum supporters just can’t support Newt, then if Gingrich drops out, Santorum gets more votes than Gingrich would have.

I don’t think this would really work, because everybody loves their own candidate and hates the other candidates, but that is how the math WOULD work.

And in fact, it does happen many times, where the person say who gets the “most votes” in the first round at a convention can’t win the convention, because as others drop out, none of their support goes to the “front-runner”.

Newt won South Carolina. If he can’t carry that momentum into Florida and beat Romney, why do you think he can beat Romney elsewhere?

Remember that support for Gingrich is based not on “we all love Gingrich”, but rather “he’s polling the best”. It’s circular — if we all decided he couldn’t win, Gingrich would NOT poll best.

Or, we could keep supporting him as he loses state after state, until it is too late for anybody, and then we can all wonder what could have been.

Santorum would have been the next person to get the “wave” of voters — except the wave, the swarm, panicked because votes were taken, and decided that Gingrich was their last stop. Before that it was Bachman, then Perry, then Cain.

Hopefully Gingrich can get back to the positive message that got him the lead, and he can win Florida.

But that assumes he can actually win primaries. He isn’t the “best choice” if he loses the election.

It’s fine to say “Santorum has no chance to win, so Newt is the best choice”. But if Newt loses Florida, how can you say he is the one who can win?

Actually, Santorum “dropping out” to help out Newt is really a lot like “affirmative action”.

"I will go all the way to the convention. I expect to win the nomination."

He can do this ONLY with our money, advocacy and votes.

He'll never get the money, advocacy or votes of the GOP-e, never. Nor of any of the institutions of Washington or New York. Nor of the Intellectual elite.

It's on us.

First he needs our money.

Donate. $50, $100. It's the best investment you'll ever make.

Do it now.

"Reagan in ‘76"

If Reagan had stood true in 76 as he did in 80 he would have won then.

One of his great political lessons was the mistake he made yeilding to establishment and press excoriation over being too radical and then announcing he would pick the commie Richard Schultz Schweiker of PA, a man not unlike GHW Bush or Romney today.

At the time not all delegates to the convention were sent by popular vote and the Republican delegation of Mississippi to switch to Ford and hand him the nomination.

Reagan never made that mistake again.

If you think Paul is so much stronger than Gingrich, why do you hope Gingrich will win Florida?

Since you state you are a Paul supporter and all...

Interesting. I worked with several Mormons, two really great guys, very decent and honest. However, as I now recall, they were very anti-Israel, and pro Palestinian. We talked politics quite a bit and I got the impression, could be wrong, that it was a pretty wide spread opinion of their faith. One of the fellows, had a brother who actually lived in Palestine, bringing LSD groups from the US into the area for missionary purposes.

Your post #45 lies in willful delusion and/or deliberate ignorance of the political process.

Please, study.

Look at the 1964, 1976 and 1980 GOP primaries.

It doesn't matter if Santorum is right on every issue from a definition of Conservatism that you hold dear.

Our first fight is the fight to cleanse the party...as a means of winning the general election for the White House, Senate and House of Representatives.

Santorum will not even win one more state.

NOT ONE!

He knows this too. Either that or he's not smart enough to the POTUS.

Upon the premise that he DOES know this to be a fact, something 90% of all potential GOP voters believe, what possible purpose could he have for staying in the race and dividing the conservative vote?

I contend it's payoff, not ideology.

Or, perhaps, he's mentally afflicted.

Because Gingrich cannot win the nomination, but Romney can. So it’s better strategically for Gingrich to deny the FL delegates to Romney.

I knew nothing about Santorum when he entered the race. I enjoyed him in the debates and then he started lying and then I saw his record. He isn't what he/others have claimed him to be. I like his attacking Romneycare - he gets my kudos on that! But if he were a real conservative - country comes before ego - he'd drop out. Nothing patriotic about him staying in with the chance of get Mitt. What a legacy he leaves for his kids. He will be despised by Americans who love this country. He will reap what he has sown - and there are no do overs.

He's so anti-abortion yet staying in - he keeps the votes that would take out the pro abortion, pro gay marriages, big gov't healthcare candidate. He's all 'hot air' self righteous, IMO. Actions speak louder than words - and if he has to give up something for the cause, he won't.

And he couldn't believe he'd be a better president that Newt. And his self righteousness attitude would fail with world leaders - he really needs to grow up first. His first step would be to take off his halo. It doesn't belong on a liar. And he has about Newt! Bearing false witness - shame on you, Rick!

You never read about Romney’s appearances - because it would be too embarrassing for the press to have to report it.

I have never seen a single Romney event televised ...

However, Newt is drawing large crords, shown on TV ...

Romney and his intimate use of the church as his campaign organization are one of the best arguments I have seen for separation of church and state.

He is not some kid praying to pass a math quiz, he is running for high political office!

I think Senator Santorum is a fine man. I could vote for him if I had to.

But, truthfully, he has not been subjected to the intense scrutiny that the others have been.

If he were to obtain front runner status, not only would he endure the media blitz of destruction...he would have to deal with the “Myth Machine” just as all of the others have had to. He was is Washington for a number of years...plenty of material.

Sadly, I think Myth was chosen from the beginning. I hate it and will fight it until the end.
