Like a few million other people this past holiday season, we bought an iPhone 4S, with its much-hyped Siri feature. The vocal interface allows users to speak all kinds of commands into the phone (Whats the weather in San Francisco?) and get answers from a sultry-voiced robot/concierge.
Weve used Siri to get directions, to make hands-free mobile calls and to fetch answers to trivia questions. Sometimes we just goof on Siri. Siri, do you love me? my daughter asked the other day. (Siris heartbreaking response: I am not capable of love.) Most ways you look at it, Siri is pretty magical.
But not in every way. Siris dirty little secret is that shes a bandwidth guzzler, the digital equivalent of a 10-miles-per-gallon Hummer H1.

...oh how cute....$135.00 worth of “cute”
anyone use “netflex”?...*smiles*
I hate voice stuff including speaking on the phone.
Well that should finally put a stop to Apple. Sell, sell, sell.
That's going to require some bandwidth, but no more than if you were having a phone conversation for the same duration of time. If you are listening to internet radio on your phone, it's the equivalent of a few seconds.
And the reply? Text to speech technology is sufficiently advanced to do that entirely within the iPhone. So, all they have to do is send back the text. But, there are cases where the entire process is done within the iPhone.
I use far more bandwidth surfing FR while I'm at lunch. Someone would have to be talking to Siri non-stop to use up as much bandwidth. And, I don't use more than about 500 megabytes/month.
I think this is a classic false correlation. The iPhone 4 was faster than the 3G, and the iPhone 4S is faster than the iPhone 4 -- not just in CPU speed, but in maximum download speeds. Better response times usually yield higher utilization, because the user can do more stuff in the same interval of time.
I’ve seen a couple of really hilarious Siri video skits...not suitable even for linking on FR! But funny as heck.
Every response you heard on the show was legitimate. There are multiple blogs and articles around the 'Net that list neat tricks and funny responses from Siri. The writers used them to weave together a really funny story.
I saw that last night and it was funny and sort of sad, too. I can see some poor geeky guys investing themselves into a relationship with ‘Siri’ instead of pushing themselves and growing to where they can relate to a girl.
Of course, I also imagine that massive technological leaps will occur as the Japanese match this technology with robotic tech to make girlfriends for creepy Japanese guys.

I can’t type on those damn keyboards — both Blackberry style and even the larger screen one on my new RAZR.
Speech recognition works best for me for searches, directives and correspondence.
As far as the PDA talking BACK to me — no way!
Sign me up. No pms, no cheating, no divorce, no whining about bills, no false abuse claims. The minute they perfect a decent robot there are going to be a lot of single American women.
There already are a lot of single American women. They all grew up thinking it was repressive to get married and by the time they hit their 30’s and decide they want to get married no decent man will touch them. Mostly because the decent men got married to women who were in their 20’s.
Men who cannot relate to women (1/2 of the human race) will not be able to relate to their children, if they even manage to have any.
So they rent a surrogate womb; how’s the lovebot going to work out as a mother?
I just don’t think the he-man woman hating club is going to be much help (or even interested) in rescuing our failing civilization.
Hunh. Judging by Jobs' biography, I'd have to guess he wrote that code when he was just getting Apple started.
I too despise talking on the phone. Don't bother calling, I won't answer.
But that Siri thing is beyond cool.
Just watched it and was giggling the whole way thru it.
“Mostly because the decent men got married to women who were in their 20s.”
Now there’s a 50’s comment if I’ve ever seen one.
Pretty funny.
As a group, iThing users consume more bandwidth to less effect than anyone else.
I’ve been saying for a few years that your last there is China’s only hope, given the level of female infanticide over the last 30 or so years.
Danger, danger Will Robinson.
This report comes from the WaPo....who’s sum total science IQ is somewhere around 25.
Add to that the fact that anything that they don’t understand gets trashed, and we get this.
I’d like to look at a spectrum analyzer, network analyzer, etc before I’d believe anything I read from the MSM troglodytes.
Remember, there’s a reason they’re writing for a newspaper...and not solving differential equations.
