The Home Depot's store in Sacramento will offer a free workshop on energy-efficient light bulbs, the store will give away 200 CFL bulbs to attendees.
The compact fluorescent lights are among the replacement options for traditional incandescent bulbs now being phased out.
This educational workshop will detail the phase-out and various lighting options as well as provide handy tips for installing specialty light bulbs, fixtures and dimmer switches.

CFL’s, CFL’s..... Those are so 1990’s-2000’s
LED light bulbs are superior and they are not as toxic and last a lot longer.

The above light work GREAT in freezers and refridgerators to replace the regular bulbs and since they are LED they don;t get as hot which helps cut energy as well.
I have a LED porch light that is bright all year long that replaces a CFL bulb that would get awfully dim in the winter.
I wouldn’t object “in principle” SO much to being forced to buy CFLs IF THEY BLOODY WORKED.
They don’t work, in the sense of truly lasting longer by 5, 8, 10 times as much as an incandescent. OK, a FEW do, but most don’t ... and I have to replace them with MORE bulbs that cost many times what an incandescent costs.
And then, of course, there’s the mercury poisoning. (One is supposed to do some sort of time-consuming special disposal for CFLs, but as another FReeper put it, the CFL Bulb Fairy takes away all of MY burned out CFLs, leaving nothing to dispose. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.)
LED lights are great in certain circumstances. Just not where money is a consideration. I use them in a few places where money is way down on the priority list, but nowhere else.
Indeed, I was blowing out appliance bulbs in my freezer about once a month, I have been using the same LED bulb in there for the last year despite it costing about 10X as much as the conventional bulb. In the long run I save money.
My porch light which is an LED has also been very nice as it keeps the porch illuminated and can work with a night/day sensor that the old CFL bulb refused ti.
Indeed, their prices will have to come down before I replace the rest of ther bulbs in my house.
If they break, I promise not to lick the rug.
Psssst....They last forever and I save on my electric bill.

Prediction: Eventually, there will be a certication required to install light bulbs...it would be enforced in public buildings like schools and courthouses.
And your path to certification will take you to the local union hall.

I’ve been hoarding incandescents for a couple of years. I have enought to last until the moment I die. Plus a few cases to unload on Ebay in a few years...
For what it’s worth, I found some that DO work.
They actually FIT in the space a regular incandescent does (some CFLs I tried don’t).
They actually LAST longer than 10 minutes (I had some that didn’t).
They actually are BRIGHTER than a 60W incandescent (900 lumens vs. 770). I had some that gave that ghostly dim white light.
Don’t know how long they last - only been using them since December.
They cost 92c at WalMart. (vs. about 70c for a regular incandescent).
Called “Lights of America”. Made in China: yuck.
But they work.
