The war may have ended in 1975, but my DH graduated GA Tech with an ROTC Army commission in 1973.

The RIFs were already in place at that time. He was not given the option of active duty for any period, only an 8 year Reserve obligation. If I recall correctly, he was a sophomore when he elected to commit to the program, and the draft ended shortly thereafter.

One of his classmates had a full ride ROTC scholarship and he was RIF'd too. Reserve duty only.

If the Army was drawing down then, I'm sure the Navy was too, and probably sooner.

My Army ROTC orders in 1973 were for 6 months active duty for training and 8 years Reserve commitment in the Corps of Engineers. Even though the Army provided for me to obtain a Pilots License in college. A Navy Pilot recruiter got me set up for an inter - service transfer. Reported to Pensacola with about 20 others with near same story in Oct 1973.

The Navy pipeline was still wide open.
