A 65-year-old man shot two teens, one fatally, as they tried to rob him Wednesday morning on a trail near the Schuylkill River, police said.

The Berks County coroner's office did not release the name of the boy who was killed, saying only that he was a 16-year-old from the city. Officials said his mother asked them to give her time to notify relatives before releasing his name.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:17 p.m. by Deputy Coroner Jonn M. Hollenbach. An autopsy is scheduled this afternoon in Reading Hospital.

The other teen, who was shot once, was taken to Reading Hospital. Police did not release his name. Information on his condition could not be obtained.

A third teen, identified only as a 15-year-old boy, was stopped at the scene by police and taken in for questioning. He was later committed to the county youth center in Bern Township on unspecified charges.

Authorities also did not release the name of the man, who was not charged.

Police said the shooting occurred shortly before 11 on the Thun Trail near the Schuylkill River pedestrian bridge between Reading and West Reading.

According to investigators:

The man was riding his bicycle on the trail near the Bertolet Fishing Dock at South First Avenue and Chestnut Street in West Reading.

The teens knocked the man off his bicycle, and two of them assaulted him.

The man pulled out a handgun and shot them both.

Ya know, we left Pa in early 90's for Alaska, after 8 years in MatSu, we moved up on the Yukon, near Canadian Border. Everybody around here is armed, but hasn't been a murder here in 35 years and that guy got drowned by his drunk friends.

Friends tell me I wouldn't recognize the place nowadays. I'd rather shoot moose, caribou, and bear than deer. I'd rather not have any state or prop taxes like back east. I like living where there is no local organized govt to enact regulations & laws. AND most of all, I like living where the nearest Law enforcement is 200 miles away and the road is closed until April. I wonder how I ever made it in Pa all those years?

I recommend all Pennsylvania freepers go get their CC permits tomorrow, if you don't already have one. I think the current fee is $25 and the permit is good for 5 years. Just take proof of residency in whatever county you live in. I've had mine for at least 20 years.

When you already have CCDW as a resident of the State of Delaware, you may simply present your DE license at a Pennsylvania county sheriff's office to have your application accepted. A background check is made and when satisfactory, your PA CCDW is sent to you -- good anywhere in PA, including downtown Philadelphia (but not in Federal buildings like Independence Hall or the Liberty Bell, since 9/11). For the Delawarean, the easiest place is at the Delaware County (PA) County Courthouse) in Media. In 1995, the fee was $12.50. It's now somewhere about $45, I think. But one used to have to provide photos -- now at Media they just do it like a driver's license. On renewal, you must appear, have your photo taken, and the license is printed and plasticated right there, pay your fee and go.

Victim? The victim is dead. The old man’s a survivor.

Where on earth did you get that idea?

Of the attackers, one PERPETRATOR is dead, the other PERPETRATOR was shot.

The bicyclist, the VICTIM, survived. And 65 is not "old," it is mature, and it can be very dangerous to mess with.

“The bicyclist, the VICTIM, survived. And 65 is not “old,” it is mature, and it can be very dangerous to mess with.”

65 is older (old enough to collect SS), but it’s hardly feeble old person/Alzheimer’s territory. That and there’s a high probability that a guy his age served in Vietnam and has combat training/expertise in handling firearms.

I guess these kids learned the hard way that someone with gray hair isn’t always the weak pushover they think. Too bad one of them had to die, but that’s how it is.

” Never piss off an old man.”

Was that story last year about 80’ish man beating the snot out of couple punks in New York.

Uncivilized Utes have had things too easy for last couple years, now with economy down turn— they might find that citizens are not willing to give up what they own so easily.

Nope, not even close. The three teens are victims of liberalism which robbed them of a father, a job and a moral compass. The old man isn’t a victim at all. He still lives and obviously was prepared not to be a victim.

If this was in Chicago— The dead Ute would be remembered as follows:

He had rough life, but was turning life around- he was on honor roll getting his GED- his 7 children by 5 different baby mommas will miss him terribly.

No one will ask why he was out assaulting citizens when he should have been in school or at home sleeping, article did not id am or pm— or I missed it.

Somewhere there is a person or persons who would have been dead at the hands of one of these predators in the near future and they were saved by this man’s actions.
