Newtzilla is back.
Six weeks ago, during the last Newt Gingrich surge, I wrote here that conventional weapons are useless against Newtzilla. . . . Everything bad about Gingrich the flip-flops, the wives, the ego is known. Once voters have convinced themselves they can overlook that stuff, its hard to change their minds simply by repeating it.

Really good article; please read it all. Jonah really nails it, including the fact that Newt is his own worst enemy and that Mittens doesn't seem to be quite of this earth.

Goldberg is right, in that the "old news" line works. What changes opinions is the surprise factor.
BJ Clinton used to try to persuade you that this was old news. it wasn't, but he would evade it until he could make that claim.
In Newt's case, it really is old news.

"..He never could have pulled it off were it not for Romneys shortcomings. For whatever reason, Romney seems like a creature put on Earth to blend in with the humans and report back what he finds. He clearly likes earthlings, and they in turn find him pleasant enough, and surprisingly lifelike. Occasionally he finds the right words, but he rarely connects them to the right tone..."
Ouch!

I’ve described him as Saccharine, but this description is better. He looks like, and is presented like a movie president. But movies have scripts. Everything is predetermined. The real world is not like that, as many are discovering.
In movies, presidents are often either black or female. In movies, most people use an apple computer. The real world is different.

Long unable to connect with voters on his terms and his timetable, he [Romney] must now try with time running out, and without seeming desperate. Sorry, but he's got nothing. He's played his hand over and over and managed to wobble between 23 and 28% in the polls. People drop out; he wobbles between 23 and 28% in the polls. He IS getting desperate, and will become more imitative, and will wobble between 23 and 28% in the polls.
Nobody wants him except that 25% who think that it's his turn.

and they in turn find him pleasant enough, and surprisingly lifelike. I don't find Romney the least bit likeable or pleasant. Seriously, what can be said about a guy so clueless that he transports his own family dog on the roof of his car and can't figure out ON HIS OWN that such is a really bad and inhumane thing to do?
It isn't just the fact that Romney has no core values other than feeding his own power and ego. It's that a basic sense of humanity is missing. And those who support him while failing to sense that reveal their own lack of humanity as well.
