He felt the need to fight, and I suppose that makes sense.
Mitt Romney had been embarrassed in South Carolina and was tumbling in Florida, so he woke up Monday morning with menace on his mind.
He attacked Newt Gingrich for a terrible deed, and then accused him of an awful thing. The details aren't as important as the apparent desperation behind the strategy.
This was an aggressive Romney. An indignant Romney. A defiant Romney. Which meant you could now add fighter to the list of personas he has tried on.
Personally, I'd prefer to finally see an authentic Romney.
........And when it was all done, I'm just not sure Romney's roundhouses helped solve his greatest problem.
In a lot of ways, Romney is the Republican version of Al Gore. The son of a politician who surpassed his father in fame, but never quite graduated to beloved.
He's polite, looks great in pinstripes and has spent most of his life in campaign mode, but he's not the first guy you would choose to ride shotgun on a college football road trip.
And this is where Romney has a problem compared to Gingrich. It is not because of income tax returns, and it is not because of Bain Capital. It is because Gingrich seems authentic, and Romney seems vaguely robotic.
.....The difference is Gingrich can do the conservative walk and chew gum at the same time.
Yet even as Gingrich was surging up the polls in Florida, some of the biggest names in the Republican party were wadding up their cocktail napkins to fling at him.
Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty said Gingrich's claim that he was paid to be a "historian'' for Freddie Mac was "just BS.'' New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called Gingrich "an embarrassment.'' Ann Coulter called him the "least electable'' of the remaining candidates.
That should be enough. Between surrogate attacks, super PAC ads and the extensive skeleton collection in Gingrich's closet, that should really be enough.
Romney can take his swipes in speeches and debates, and he can raise his eyebrows at the appropriate moment for a good laugh. But playing pit bull for the camera is not his style.
And while voters may not be versed in every debate topic, they're pretty good at spotting a candidate who isn't committed to what he is saying....

Anyone that has to try on a new face is not the person we want to nominate.
We have to have a fighter, someone that IS a fighter, not putting on a face of a fighter.
I saw and heard Coulter’s screeching frantic flailing at Newt last night on O’Reilly unfortunately. She should of been issued a straight jacket before that interview, or at least some medication, she’s gone off the deep end on her hate of Newt.
Romney leads with his face. That's why it doesn't work for him.
She is so out of control that when BO is speaking she is shaking...not listening...ready to jump in with her screeching and yelling.
The REVOLUTION has begun...THE PEOPLE WILL RULE...NOT these elitist establishment snobs...WE THE PEOPLE have to show that we will no longer be led around like sheep!
Everything on their end (the establishment) will become unhinged if Newt gets the nomination...Ann is like the third wave rolling against anyone other than Mitt, and if you have noticed they are getting more and more scared of Newt as the weeks pass.
If WE THE PEOPLE create a tsunami we can deal a tremendous blow to the elitist establishment of DC! But it will take more than one tsunami in order to deal a fatal blow...We have to keep rolling them in with each new election. The work has only begun!
Viva la revolucion!
Someone get the Doctor, I think Coulter is in the midst of a Manic Bi-Polar phase. She needs some help.
The sad thing is that she doesn't even look as provocative as she used to.
If he's such a fighter and loves his country so much, why hasn't he or any of his sons ever served in our military?????
SKCM(SS), USN Retired
Newt is articulately and passionately fighting for conservative values, while Romney is fighting for his "destiny" to be the Republican presidential nominee.
Fighter Mitt? Was he as scary and vicious as Jimmy Carter’s attack rabbit?
What everyone on here and most of America knows, we want and need a fighter! But, we don’t need someone to fight conservatives, we need someone to fight the communist-in-chief! And we know that Mittens will roll-over and play lapdog (ala McCant) when it comes to attacking or fighting Obama! He isn’t a “moderate,” he is a PROGRESSIVE! And he will do everything in his power to get Obama re-elected, just like his buddy and pal - McCant!
NO, NO, NO to Mittens!
“Whack-a-Mitt”
Should Newt win the nomination we will have to pick up significant independent and democrats voters to win the general election. As the GOP elite will continue their Vichy ways and vote for obama. All their actions indicate they would do so without hesitation.
He will be running against the democrats and the republicans and I would expect no help from the RNC and by suspect of any offered.
The arrogance and contempt for the conservative base by the establishment/elites of the GOP is breathtaking in it’s scope. Should the GOP establishment sabotage a Newt candidate and not support it or halfheartedly support it I would expect this to be the end of the Republican party as the base would move to open rebellion and third party would be the only option in 2014.
A house divided cannot stand against itself.
The truth usually does.
For some reason the thought of Santorum and Romney squaring off just doesn’t have that intimidation factor.
Kinda like two wimpy frat dudes becoming gang members.
