Romney Takes It To Gingrich At Outset of Florida Debate
Mitt Romney dropped the gloves within minutes of the outset of tonight's Republican presidential debate, assailing main rival Newt Gingrich as an unreliable conservative who could embarrass the GOP.
The former Massachusetts governor, who suffered a 12-point loss just last Saturday to Gingrich in the South Carolina primary, went aggressively after Gingrich at the very top of tonight's NBC News/National Journal/Tampa Bay Times debate reflecting his effort to halt any momentum Gingrich carries into Florida's Jan. 31 primary.
"The speaker was given the opportunity to be the leader of our party in 1994. And at the end of four years, he had to resign in disgrace," Romney said.
Romney hammered Gingrich on his work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac and the ethics troubles Gingrich encountered as speaker, reminding primary voters of the headaches Gingrich had caused for the party during his time in office.
"Don't forget at the end of the speaker's term as speaker, his approval rating was down to 18 percent. We suffered historic losses," Romney said.
It was the kind of red-hot fight most political observers had expected tonight after the GOP presidential primary was thrown into upheaval by the former House speaker's victory in this past weekend's in South Carolina.

Well, I as we type, those few minutes are being re-aired all over at different sites.
I was pretty much blown away by the lack of Newt’s response.
If this was some kind of strategy as some have suggested, I didn’t see it.
Romney was attacking Gingrich this evening because he was “lobbying” for the GSE’s. Well guess what, Romney’s investing in them.
Don’t forgot Obama’s plan in regards to capital gains defines the “rich” at $250k. Romney defines it at $200k. Why is Obama’s plan more pro-growth than the candidate with an R behind his name?
That's very good to know. We'll make a note of that for our files. :>)
It was considered a safe and sound investment by many Financial Advisors back in the day.
Andrea’s comments were about the release of Romney’s 2010 tax filings...not back in the day.
Actually I thought Newt was copying some of Paul points. Newt recent campaign promises are mirroring what Obama did to win over votes. He is promising the world (taking positive points from each candidate) just to get elected. I predict after 4 years everyone will wonder why they voted from him.
I am leaning toward Rick because he is the ONLY candidate speaking from the heart and has the passion to follow through on his beliefs. (Rick admits to his mistakes upfront unlike the other who dance around the truth).
Loser: Mitt and Newt
Why? How should Newt hsve handled Willard assault?

His 2010 Tax???? Dang he must have lost the entire investment if he held that long. Shows he was not a insider.
Erin Burnett?? hehehe!!!!!!
Newt certainly is not saying anything and everything to get elected. He is speaking truth. Paul said in effect he agress with Newt, but that he still has some work to do on Newts idea on Foreign Affairs. He sides with Newt on most.
Newt will be the next Prsident of the United States, and not just my opinion.
Do what he almost did - what he started to do - which was simply to ignore them and move against Obama. He almost did that. And he answered the sugar cane question and should have ridiculed that question too.
In short, they all let Brian Williams and those stupid locals run roughshod over them. I thought it was embarrassing. Santorum had a good night but that’s because he was given softballs all night when he wasn’t ignored.
If I were him, I would SHUT UP about his 15%. (I know it is a LOT of money), but most people do not like to hear that 15%. It is a if he is saying "Well, I am just smarter and richer than you peons, and I know how to do that and YOU DON'T, nah, nah, nah" Not a good sell for people out of work.
I dont think Mitt was able to draw any blood.

Let me state right out in front, I am not a Gingrich or Romney supporter. I think that Santorum did very well tonight by not allowing himself into the fray. I also think Santorum is the best that is left still running. I also thought Ron Paul handled himself very well and was given time to explain his positions, some of there were very good, but Rick Santorums answer on Iran was the best answer of the night.
Did Romney draw blood, yes he did, that is what these guys do when the liberal press asks the questions. They try to draw blood. Newt claimed that he only got $25,000 but then in a comment that Mitt made it came out that Newt owned the company, that drew blood. I think that Newts answer to the question about his leaving congress because he wanted to was silly, surely he didn’t think that one through.
Newt has a worse problem though. The press is already harping how his first several years working for Freddie and Fanny contracts are missing. While it may not be seen in the press all over the country I think it will be big in Florida. I have a second home there, I can hardly wait to visit and see what people think.
I thought Newt handled Mitt’s attacks really well. He looked presidential and didn’t let Mitt make him mad. All in all a good night for Newt.
Frankly, I watched some of the commentators from NBC covering the debate (which I didn’t see) and they were surprisingly fair. They said that Mitt did not help himself tonight, that he was not connecting. They gave Newt points for keeping his cool and staying “above” it all. Said Newt was more presidential. I know that they probably were being kind about Newt because they think he can’t win against the “won”, but it gave me a good overview of how the debate went.
Yeah but
They bring the fence in for Rick.
Low, slow or no aspirations.
