Did Newt Gingrich Out Brit Hume’s Dead Gay Son?

Out of nowhere, the Miami Herald has dusted off and expanded upon one of Washington’s oldest and juiciest political rumors: The one about a rising young beltway journalist and his gay affair with a powerful GOP congressman, and how the journalist shot himself in the head when his lover’s political rival threatened to out them. According to the Herald, that rival may have been Newt Gingrich.

It’s a sad story, all around.

Well, at least Britt may have a reason (unsubstantiated) to hate Newt.

Our children are our reason for living.

Nothing worse than the loss of a child.

Whats that maniacs Coulter's excuse?

I was watching the morning Tony Snow told viewers about Sandy Hume taking his own life. Tony did it as only he could. God, I miss that man.

The comments on that thread are particularly hateful. If any are true, lets hope Newt’s expression of sorrow for past transgressions and request for forgiveness are indeed heartfelt.

It sounds like Brit might have a reason to hate Newt. He would want to blame someone for his son’s suicide even if it’s not true. It’s human nature. Maybe Brit didn’t even know his son was gay, and maybe the you ger Hume was afraid of his conservative father finding out, or of embarrassing his father professionally. Brit would thus feel forever guilty, and blaming newt would be a cover.

I found this comment interesting from someone who says he was a page and that newt was very nasty on the hill, at your link:

Piggybacking on the earlier comment about staffer mistreatment, let me give you an illustration of Gingrich’s nastiness. Two elderly African-American sisters ran the lunch counter in the Republican Cloakroom (an operation about the size of your average wetbar, from which they served sodas, snacks, and the most delicious tuna sandwiches), and had been doing so since their childhood, when their parents ran it. Routinely, Gingrich would berate them, in public, for the smallest things (or even made-up complaints), leaving the rest of us aghast and embarrassed for the women. Look, abusing staffers is one thing — it’s part of the gig, I guess — but to not even have the decency to treat well women who’d been part of Congress’ institutional memory long before and after Gingrich says a lot about his character. It says everything about his character.

My issue with Gingrich isn’t his politics. I don’t agree with John Boehner’s politics or policy recommendations at least 90% of the time, but he is a gentleman. Ditto, Dick Armey. Ditto, (oh my, I can’t believe I’m saying this publicly) Rick Santorum, who was a Representative during my Page term. Gingrich is a cold, callous, unrepenting bastard, and he has no business being our President.

(Some other day I’ll tell you all the homophobic things he said about Hillary Clinton during the “Hillary Care” debates and the racist things he said about African-Americans during the Crime Bill debates. But none of these would surprise you — or were limited to Gingrich.)
