Why are they searching his car for running a red light?

My first thought, too. I thought they needed a cause to search.

—Why are they searching his car for running a red light?—

My thoughts exactly. It’s the first thing that hit my mind, actually. There is more to this story.

I get pulled over by cops several times a year and get cited about once every 18 months. I’ve never had my car searched. Ever.

Why are they searching his car for running a red light?

He may have showed his permit to carry with his drivers license. I have my permit with my license in my wallet, whether I am carrying or not (usually it is just transporting to and from the range. Police around here are completely different than those in NY. It is very common to carry here, or to go between home and the range, or to hunt. The reason I would show my permit with my drivers license is that it is possible for the police to get that info prior to approaching my car. I want to be complete above board and demonstrate to the police that I am not a threat to them beyond roll-stopping a stop sign every once in a while.

It doesn't matter, they know fighting it will cost tens of thousands of dollars
and either way the Seal or anyone else will lose, guilty or not.

Maybe the cop asked if he had any weapons in the vehicle and he said yes.
The weapons question is asked by many officers to intimidate.
