Tough New York gun law stirs debate
Ryan Jerome was arrested when he tried to security-check his pistol
The former Marine has a permit for the gun in his home state, but he was visiting New York
The state requires that gun-toting visitors have a New York-issued permit
People carrying guns are arrested even though they have permits from their home states
NEW YORK (CNN) -- An online campaign in support of a former U.S. Marine -- arrested for attempting to security-check his pistol while visiting the Empire State Building -- is bringing new attention and a fair amount of scrutiny to one of the nation's toughest gun-control laws.
Ryan Jerome, 28, was charged with criminal possession of his .45-caliber Ruger while visiting the famous New York landmark during a September vacation with his girlfriend. Jerome has a license to carry the weapon from his home state of Indiana, but New Yorks state gun laws do not recognize out-of-state permits.
With his case still pending, Jerome could face up to three and a half years in jail.
Jerome's attorney says its clear his client, who does not have a criminal record, wasn't attempting anything nefarious because Jerome approached security on his own to tell the guards about his weapon...

I hate NY.
Stay out of New York with your gun and stay out of Washington D.C. with your car. Damned camera’s are everywhere.
I wouldn’t step foot in New York if the trip were free.
I think that their are enough gun owners in this country to make a significant statement and cut into NYC's tourist trade to have an impact.
Mayor Bloom-in-Idiot and his far left, anti-2nd Amend coterie in the Big Apple needs to have a strong message sent to them and it needs to be loud and clear.
and NY recognizes reciprocity with NO OTHER STATE.
come on folks....until the Supremes or Congress or someone straightens this all out...don't expect your license to work in states other than the ones that accept you license....or be prepared to be detained.
Yeah...NY really bites the big one (I live here and have a CCW and know how bad it is)...but the rest of the country should know this by now.
Everyone should not be construed to mean anyone other than criminals and those with enough political pull to get a CCW license in NYC
Because NYCs CCW laws are not rational for any other group of persons in NYC.
That's why most people who want to own guns, make money or own property are now leaving or won't move there in the first place.
Some of us have the (apparently silly) notion that Article 4 of the Constitution is still in force:
Article. IV.
Section. 1.
Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State.
Perhaps other states can refuse to recognize NY driver’s licenses.
I still think the 2nd is ‘infringed’ upon to unconstitutional levels by both the states and the feds....so that article IV is just double unconstitutionality at work.....
now if you want to make a test case in NY....or even worse in NJ, you go right ahead. But I will continue to work within ‘the system’ to get what I need until we can get the constitution lined out.(no we should not have to...it should be perfect but it ain't)
It sounds like Albany has a problem similar to the man who says everyone else is crazy. Yet he never considers that he maybe the one who is crazy.
F*&% New York. I do not go there. I do no business with any business there. I urge my friends and business associates to do the same. I have relatives in NY. I do not visit them there (and they’re BDLs anyway, and really, really annoying).
NYC handgun laws are simple especially for visitors. You can’t have one. Period. If they find you with one you go to jail. Don’t bother applying for a permit, such things don’t exist unless you are rich and famous. On the bright side, it’s probably worse in New Jersey.
You need to be careful on your use of gun type references.
They are watching and in some places, that's enough to arrest you on weapons charges or threats of violence.

yeah but not just NY, Jersey is worse.....I live in NY and I hunt in NY.
when I go hunting, it saves me around an hour and a load of gas to go through Jersey and PA and then back up into NY.
I must lock up all my weapons in the trunk and separate from the ammo(rifles and handguns)....if caught in NJ with a gun, even if you do follow the rules, they may lock you up an throw away the key. NJ is the worst.
Once upon a time didn’t they make a movie about people trying to escape New York?
Here’s a link to state gun laws published by ATF. See if you can find the applicable law to this case...
