Internet's Dr Evil sprang electronic locks in his 'Bond villain lair' and retreated to safe room

Full title: Internet's Dr Evil sprang electronic locks in his 'Bond villain lair' and retreated to safe room as police swooped. (Megaupload.com)

It sounds like something more reminiscent of a James Bond film than real life.

When police officers attempted to arrest the man accused of being one of the world's biggest internet pirates at his multi-million pound mansion, things were a bit trickier than they might have expected.

Instead of giving himself up easily, Kim Dotcom refused to let the police in, activated a number of locking mechanisms in his sprawling home and then hid in a safe room.

The determined police officers had to cut their way through to gain access and then found Mr Dotcom hiding near a gun.

Fortunately, thanks to dozens of police officers, backed by helicopters, they managed to detain the 38-year-old without anyone coming to harm.

Mr Dotcom, a German national, was one of four men arrested on Friday as part of an investigation of the Megaupload.com website.

Why did they destroy the intercom and snatch the cars? Sounds like U.S. police.

I read an analysis of the filed charges which detailed a lot of troubling inconsistencies compared to similar charges against previous targets. This company was in most cases following the letter of the law as current understood. It had an agent to handle copyright take down requests and acted on those requests.

The bottom line seems to be that it operated much like other cloud storage/ transfer agents like dropbox, yousendit etc. The shifting sands don't help. I think the biggest mistake will end up being Kim's bad pr. Don't act like a punk and stay under the radar.

The other file sharing services are starting to fall.

Following the MegaUpload shutdown and indictments last week, FileSonic, one of the Internet's most popular file-sharing services, has disabled its sharing functionality.

Look for the rest to follow suit.

Why did they snatch the cars?
The cars will be posted on e-bay separately from the estate.

Not a bad spread... He just needed a tunnel out of his safe room to an awaiting submarine.

At least that's what I would do, if I was Dr. Evil. That, and buying a bunch of matching jumpsuits for my henchmen.

Henchmen, Minions, whatever... the important part is definitely the *tunnel*. Hard to believe this guy didn't cover the basics. It's not as though there aren't numerous examples of proper villain behavior, to-wit:

HE is the one who looks bad here? Cuz he had locks? Cuz he didn’t welcome the DYNAMIC ENTRY TEAM into his house?

People are freaking NUTS —the man runs a site where people TRANSFER FILES, so what..?

Hollywood leaned on the US Gov, which then leaned on New Zealand.

NOW we see who runs the country, wow. Apparently Hollywood runs the whole world.

This Dr. Evil guy has a distribution system, and if Hollywood REALLY is full of the geniuses they say they are full of, then they would have struck a DEAL with him, instead of throwing him in JAIL.

“We are all about money” —they say that crap a million times whenever they make that bilge where the murderer in the end turns out to be a blonde priest or businessman.

Hollywood adapt to changing technology? Who needs that when you’ve got kooky ninjya guys hopped up with machine-guns, right?

Yeah, the biz solution is GUNS, yeah.

They’re covering this story from the perspective of a SOCIALIST —they spend lots of time detailing the man’s wealth, trying to harnass our ENVY.

Say, he’s that rich, chipping off a piece of Hollwood wealth, right?

Well how rich are THEY, then..? They’ve been at it almost 100 years, in Hollywood, after all....

Ah RIGHT!

It’s OK cuz THEY are liberals; they TALK the right, egalitarian way, and it’s all about their INTENTIONS, and not the effects, so it’s ok for them, yeah.

Cops are likely in trouble with the politicians because they didn’t kill him. No messing with Hollywood you know.

You would think he would of built in a secret escape tunnel.

I read a bit more about this - apparently this guy was only leasing the mansion (but had plans to buy it at the end of the lease). I guess that explains the lack of escape tunnel.

Actually, I have to retract my admiration (though his architect has a sharp eye). If he’s one of those guys who helps pirate copyrighted material, may he be summarily disgorged.
