U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will step down from Congress this week to focus on her recovery, her staff announced Sunday. "I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," Giffords said in a video message. Giffords, a third-generation Arizonan who served five years in the state Legislature before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2006, will not seek re-election this fall. Giffords vowed to return public service. "I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country," she said.

Would you really vote for someone based on tragedy in her life? I wish her well personally, but she should have resigned at the first chance to express herself. The congressional delegation from her home state should have asked for a resignation based upon her inability to do anything but get well.
Sometimes yes. There is more to life than politics.
No, this is not shallow thinking. There are times in life when decency trumps politics. You don’t want to compound the hurt by having her suffer an electoral loss as well. “Part of this nation’s problems” are people who cannot rise above politics and do what is decent. If she were running for President then it’s different.
Why retire, she was the perfect democrat..
Almost hard to believe with the likes of Blabberman Schultz being one of her close confidantes. More likely trying to build up her Moderate/Conservative standing for reelection. That bill had no chance of going anywhere. Having said that good luck to her on the rehab.
Good call from her.
About Time. No worries, she gets money for life anyway
“...took a bullet to the head and went through hell...”
-
A poor reason to support her as your representative.
Remember: She VOTED Aug. 1, 2011 on the debt ceiling increase... let there be no question of having to wait until now to resign based on competency... if she was competent to VOTE, she could have resigned any time since then... conversely, if she was not competent until now, her vote in August was FRAUD.
One doesn’t add to grief. Sometimes basic decency trumps politics when its a congressional district to which she had been elected to serve and was cut short by a point blank bullet to her head.
It's the same thing that happened to, I think, a senator in the Dakotas somewhere after he suffered from some sort of injury/health issue. The senate kept him in office in order to keep another seat firmly in the democratic caucus.
I wish her nothing but the best, but it's time for the democrats to start playing by the rules.
She is doing the right thing in stepping down.
She made the right decision.
Maybe in some rare circumstance where the call is close, but I dont define decency as pity for a left wing radical which would allow her to further an agenda of destroying the country we knew and loved.
That’s ridiculous. Duty trumps most all things. It was indecent for her to hold office, or to run for office when she was unable to serve.
And it is likely her health and recovery took a hit just for the stress of running and the public and political appearances and travels she made, on account of her NOT retiring into the full quietude needed to recover.
WHO was indecent and wrong to her? Those driven by both emotional and political reflex. The latter worst in the persons that exploited her. But if folks have fallen to immature selfish emotionally driven reactions like the one you seem to have, then the politicians did what they always do. Play to the whims of the mob.
The fix is to stop being a mob. Start being responsible adults. If male, be a Man. If female try to be a Woman of Valor.
Then the wounded and sick have a better chance everywhere.
Amen, and Amen!
There is likelihood of ramifications to insurance coverage termination.
the idea behind good bennies and good pay for politicians is that it is supposed to prevent them being bribed.
My take about the congresswoman is that if she were a republican there would have been daily articles about how she should step down for “the good of the people.”
Live Well Gabby.
This is w...nsfe.
